How long after giving up breast feeding did periods return?

I've decided to stop brestfeeding and am trying to decide whether to finish before or after Christmas , we're also away for new year and don't really want to be on for this time, but it would be easier for other people to help me.
How long did most people's periods take to return?
I've breast fed for 4 months and he's now mixed fed if this makes any difference?

I had them while exclusively b'feeding , at about 6 and 9 weeks then again at 5 months having started to wean ds onto solids, but still b'feeding, in the in weeks previous. Similar pattern with dd. So ime no guarantees for you from now on anyway, sorry.

I fully bf and got my first one at 5 mths
Am currently on my 3rd

sparklyjen · 08/12/2007 17:49

My periods came back just a few weeks after giving birth despite breastfeeding.

JackieNoel · 08/12/2007 17:50

Yup, mine came back a few months in, despite fully bf - rather to my surprise, first time round.

santasmissus · 08/12/2007 18:09

mine came back at 10 months while still bf 2-3/day, but i still wasn't ovulating (i don't think) as i had a period for a week every fortnight for a little while then they got sorted out a bit more

PortAndLemonaid · 08/12/2007 18:23

Mine came back at 9 months once DS stopped bf at night (or stopped bf every night, at least ). Was still bf him until a couple of weeks ago (so 34 months or so).

If you are mixed feeding you may well find they come back regardless of when you stop altogether.

Trinaj · 08/12/2007 19:21

This is my 3rd but I was only able to bf for a couple of weeks each time before and I can't remember it being any different to normal.
Was first period horrid? apart from inconvienience!

mne came back literally a few weeks after giving up bf completely

5goldrings4MONKEYBIRDs · 08/12/2007 19:43

er, pretty much 4 weeks after each birth and was fully BF every 2-3 hours! Get smaller periods every 4 weeks thereafter

TheOldestCat · 08/12/2007 19:47

Sorry to hijack, Trinaj, but has anyone BFed over a year and not got their period back? Not that I'm complaining, you understand, but DD is 13 months - no night feeds, just three or four feeds a day, before work and in the evening. Just wondered.

PortAndLemonaid · 08/12/2007 22:45

I have friends who didn't get periods back until somewhere between a year and 2.5 years while breastfeeding. Everyone is different...

ruddynorah · 08/12/2007 22:46

the following month. had been down to 2 feeds a day before that, at 8 months.

BetterBitOfButter · 08/12/2007 22:52

2 weeks after stopping bf at 6 months.

BadZelda · 08/12/2007 23:10

With first LO I breastfed until 20 months - no periods; stopped BF, got one, forgot to use a condom...got up the duff. Second LO is now 6 months, still BF and no AF yet...

TheOldestCat · 09/12/2007 10:29

Thanks for helpful replies. Trinaj - seems everyone is different!

Trinaj · 09/12/2007 17:59

I agree. Thanks - particularly bbob - that's exactly what i was after. - Did anyone else choose to stop, and how long before it returned, once stopped? Did it last longer than normal?
Thanks - sorry if tmi.
