DD is 9 weeks old and for past few days as slept right thru for roughly 9 hours at night, absolutely fantastic but im waking up in the morning absoutely soaked right around the chest and so sore and engorged, i dont know whether i should try and get up to expess thru the night or will my body adjust to this, and how will it affect my milk supply, advice greatly appreciated!!

Your body will adjust and it shouldn't affect your supply. If it does affect your supply during the day, just put dd on the breast more during the day for a couple of days and your supply will increase.
You lucky lady!

i express before i go to bed, its amazing the change in DD, i never thought it would happen but feeding has got so much quicker as well, the 1st couple of nighs she slept right thru i up every half hour just checkin she was breathing , i dont feel too daft about doin that cos every woman iv told that said they done exactly the same lol.

Just shows there are the odd ones here and there! Are you demand feeding (just being nosey!.

I think your supply will settle within another few days, why not express in the morning to build a supply in the freezer. That way you can get out and about and your DH/DM etc can babysit. Have a look at www.kellymom.com for tips on expressing and freezing BM.

mindy26 · 03/12/2007 21:49

I used some very early milk to cook with when I was wening DD. I mixed it with cereals, especially porridge. She liked it mashed into banana too! I think it eased the transition in tastes iyswim?

Hope your DD did well again last night - we are teething molars here and having a nightmare

mawbroon · 04/12/2007 14:03

I used to pump when I got woken with the pain once ds started sleeping through. It got later and later each night and it took about a week or so for my boobs to be able to go all night! It gave me a nice stash of EBM for in the freezer.

dal21 · 04/12/2007 16:31

i would leave it otherwise expressing is teling you breasts to make the same amount. my ds is just over 12 weeks old and i had the same problem for a few nights - was in absolute agony for 2/3 nights and in his first feed he was getting so much milk he would pull off and get it in the face! amusing for me! things settled after 3 nights.

mindy26 · 04/12/2007 20:19

she slept 4 a full 12 hours last night and i was the same again this morning, expressed left side as soon as i got up nd got 5 oz normally i sruggle to get 1oz lol, she got sprayed in the face several times 2, i thk im gonna try wearin a couple of nappies in my bra tonight to see if it keeps me and the bed dry

Hi Mindy, well done, what a little star!! I had similar - DD1 slept through 7 to 7 from about 8 weeks and DD2 from about 9 weeks. Don't under any circumstances get up and express in the night - your baby is sleeping through DO NOT ruin it, enjoy the sleep!!! The pain and engorgement will settle down in no time, also I found if there was the odd regression when they woke up in the night I always had plenty of milk to feed even though it wasn't a usual occurance (thankfully). Re breast pads my milk supply was always off the chart and I could only ever use tommee tippee, nuk or the expensive Boots ones (can't remember what they are called) - basically they are all just like nappies and have the same gel type lock away core. Any other type whether washable or disposable left me sodden and exploding. Once in desperation I cut a maternity sanitary towel in half and used that - worked just fine... but yuk!!

mindy26 · 04/12/2007 21:17

it is the cheapest breast pads ive been using and ive been using 2 or 3 at once and still soaked through in the morn lol, maybe i should splash out on the dearer 1s and see if it gets ay better but i do have some newborn nappies leftover and theyr looking mighty tempting 2 shove in my bra tonight lol

oh and can anyone tell me, will my boobs ever stop leaking??????

OP posts:
ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 05/12/2007 09:57

They will stop leaking, once your body has got used to your lo sleeping through. There isn't really anything else you can do.

Oh, I sleep on my stomach and I found this made leaking worse. Maybe something to do with my nips brushing against the bed and springing into action?

yeah i found lying on my tummy made it worse and on my side lol, now im lying on my back constantly, i can definitely reccomend nappies tho, i cut a newborn nappy in half and put half in each side last night and woke up completely bone dry this morning, it looked a bit strange with nappies sticking out my bra but done the trick fantastically

Upside: My 12 week old DS slept for 7 hours last night for the first time in weeks!! Downside: I woke up in agony from over full boobs, thinking I was having a heart attack as I foolishly fell asleep on my front! It took me a while to work out why it was hurting! I haven't leaked milk since DS was 7 days old, fingers crossed it won't start now!
