Antiobiotics and bf - dental abscess

Things are coming in threes round here, and the third one is that I woke up this morning with a painful lump on my gum under an old (dodgy) root canal filled tooth. I have an emergency dental appt later today, but I know it's an abscess and I'm sure I'm going to need antibiotics. I'm still bf ds, though only twice a day. Does anyone know if dental antibiotics are likely to mean I have to stop? I'd be happy to in some ways (posted about it recently) but DS is going to be distraught. Anyone with any knowledge, please help!

thanks Katymac. I've taken paracetemol and it has got rid of the pain (it's not bad, the tooth is dead anyway).

I was referred to a specialist a few months ago over this as there was residual swelling below the tooth / in my chin (it's a lower front tooth) but they wanted £598! I don't have that sort of money, so just left it. My dentist seems a bit rubbish - just said fine when I said it had settled down a lot. Anyway, since it has come up in a big sore lump on my gum overnight I thought I'd better see someone, but I'm getting really worried about the antibiotic thing now..

I took a large-ish dose of erythromycin (sorry SP!) for an infected wisdom tooth whilst DS was very young and exclusively breastfeeding. I had to take it because I needed the infection to go before I had the tooth taken out. They said it was fine for DS, but he might get diahorrea because of it. He did get a bit of diahorrea, but it did not bother him at all, he still put weight on and feeding was not interrupted.

PS I took that AB as I am allergic to penicillin. Maybe penicillin is better for BF, I don't know, but you certainly can take some of them whilst BF.

thanks crokky. I'm allergic to penecillin too, and not very tolerant of erythromycin (the only other time I took it, it made me sick enough to begin puking blood, was pretty grim). But it's good to know there are some abs out there that can be used while bf.

I'm pretty sure I had AB's for dental problems a couple of times whilst breastfeeding Ds1. There are certainly some you can take, just mention that you are BF though I know Erythromycin is one of the safer ones, I'm sure there are others...good luck, sorry you're having this it's horrid isn;t it?

it's not nice. though now the pain has gone I do feel a bit of a fraud taking an emergency appt.

My dentist gave me amoxycillin when I was bf DS2 and all was fine. Have sadly had to have the tooth out now, and it was still ok to bf after the local anaesthetic, I was the same with the emergency appointment, but do use it as there is nothing worse than toothache!

tooth abcess is worth an emergency appointment. the sooner you treat it the less you will have to take for it.

i did not realise what mine was early enough and was given the wrong drugs so spent 4 days rolling in agony on the bed and puking everwhere, kept dreaming of commiting suicide just to relieve the agony. childbirth was much easier than the tooth abcess! and I got present at the end. just ended up minus a tooth after the abcess.

well, I've been and the dentist was lovely (want him for my real dentist, he was great). I had an abscess with this tooth about 2.5 years ago and the tooth has died (and I TOTALLY agree about the agony, I was counting breaths and heartbeats all night to get through the pain), but the infection never cleared up properly. Todays dentist drilled out the root canal and drained the infection (eugh) but told me to go to my own dentist for getting it sorted properly. So now I have to seek out my (private) dentist's emergency contact details so I can get antib's and the whole job finished. I wish I could get an NHS dentist round here, but I can't. I loath having to go private. I'll remember all everyone has said about the antibiotics - thanks all
