Desperate help regarding teats, baby choking!

My daughter is 4.5 months and is on maam teat 2. She drinks fine when asleep but when she’s awake she sucks on the bottle so fast she takes in too much milk and chokes. It has been a month since I swapped to size two and she’s still choking, I’m so confused no idea what to do. Are Avent medium size teats any better? Thinking of swapping. I’m just so lost to why she still chokes she’s gonna be 5 months in two weeks. She should be on teat 3 now.

Have you tried going back to size 1? Have you read about paced feeding?

Bumblejuly2020 · 10/05/2021 15:24

I wouldn't worry about what size teat she should be using. As long as she was feeding well with the smaller teat (able to take a good volume in a reasonable time), I would go back to the number 1 teat and try the 2 again in a few weeks.

I’d go back to size 1 if there wasn’t any issues before. The ages on the teat sizes are just guides. My little girl has just turned 1 but still uses 0-6 month teats (Nuk bottles) - I tried changing but she couldn’t handle it.

@shouldistop @Vicky1989x @Bumblejuly2020 I tried going back to teat 1 but then it would take so long for her to have it she would stop at one ounce.

Could you try a vari flow teat?

BertieBotts · 10/05/2021 17:04

Why would she stop at 1oz if still hungry? It doesn't matter if the feed takes longer.

Vicky1989x · 10/05/2021 17:19

@Jazzy1990 what about changing bottle? My DD could never get on with Mam bottles - I found size 2 too slow and size 3 too fast so stuck with Nuk.

Jazzy1990 · 10/05/2021 17:31

@shouldistop I was thinking about variflow but she sucks so hard so wouldn’t that be worse as variflow gives out more if they suck vigorously

@BertieBotts it’s like she just quenches her hunger and is done when she’s drinking with teat 1.

@Vicky1989x I’m thinking about trying AVENT nipples.

It sounds like she is sucking really fast and then has too much in her mouth to cope with. It might be worth trying different teats to find one that is the right flow rate for her.
My DD has all sorts of feeding problems, brain issues and a cleft palate, so not comparable but she does something similar. She chews on the bottle gets loads in her mouth and then coughs and splutters but if I was using a smaller teat she would not be taking enough milk. I have learnt how she feeds and when she is getting too much milk I take the teat out of her mouth or change the angle of the bottle to slow down the flow. This might be something you could do in the interim?
Also we have SALT input and they have said as long as she is coughing up her milk and not going blue or getting chest infections it means she isn't actually inhaling the milk and is protecting her airway. If it continues being an issue and you are worried maybe talk to your health visitor or GP?

If she miraculously drinks fine in the night then it isn’t the test and it isn’t a health or physical issue x

It sounds like your little one may have a bottle aversion. Google Rowena Bennett x
