ouch - sore nipples at 18 months - is this normal?

DS is 18 months and bf, and over the past month or so my nipples have started to get really chafed. There are red sore patches either side, I think from his front teeth. They are shiny and tender, not agony but not comfortable either.

He's had front teeth since 6 months - why have they only started to rub me now? His latch seems to be fine to me - any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this? Sorry, am a bit clueless as I've never had any problems before this - bar the odd bite - so kind of surprised.

My DD's 2.3 and my nipples have been sore for a while now, I've even had sores come up which never appeared in the early days.

IMO it's the force with which they suck rather than the teeth, being stronger there is more friction perhaps. DD does knacker them in the mornings in particular. Some days I have to make her change sides frequently so as to limit the wear and tear.

Oh well, good to know I'm not alone. I find mornings hardest too, Brangelina!

It's just so surprising to me that I got through the early months with never a whisper of a sore or mastitis or anything, and now suddenly ow!

If anyone has any suggestions of how to solve this (other than early weaning!) I'd love to hear it.
