Baby cold prevents BF - I could use some advice :)

My 9mD has her first cold, poor lamb. It is preventing her from BF so I've tried to express to give her some mummy milk but yields poor and dropped in last couple days (I have cold too)so I don't have enough for her afternoon/evening/early morning snacks. Today have resorted to supplementing with formula.
She's doing great with a beaker but here's the thing - will she go back to my boob once her snuffles/sore throat subside or not? If she doesn't,worried that my milk will fizzle out altogether.
Any similar experiences out there?

get one of those

Try using saline nose drops (ask your pharmacist) before a BF to clear her nose - normally it works long enough for them to be able to feed. HTH

ok....my ds2 has had a snuffly nose since he was born and he is now 8 months fully bf and basically it just takes longer to feed them. they have to keep latching on and off to breathe. they start doing that and then while they're on the boob you basically get the snot out in whatever you wish and then the feed become longer and longer until they've still got snuffles but can breathe to. by no means stop!! if you intend to carry on after the cold has gone you'll need to keep up your milk supply and make sure that you extra cuddle time with her both topless so that she continues to want to be close to you in that way.

agree with Tina - drops are great, annoying to put in but they do work! try to give any supplemented milk in a cup rather than bottle! if you want to stop it's a toally different ball game!

hi - thanks for the suggestions. the only thing I haven't tried is a bogie suction thingy so will invest immediately - hopefully DD will stay still long enough to deploy. She doesn't want to latch on at all and just cries when I get my boobs out. Will persevere with expressing. Thanks for the feedback. love lou & becky x

There are other models around, try and google 'nose blower'. imo it's the only thing that really works to get the bad stuff out. They hate it but are much happier afterwards.

fondant4000 · 30/10/2007 12:55

I found wiping dd's nose with wet cotton wool, then waiting for a few minutes for the bogies to come out helped - but it may not be enough for your situation!

They normally do go back on the breast when they get the chance!

ParanoidPetra · 30/10/2007 12:59

the nose blower is called a nasal aspirator(sp?) i got mine from one of the larger superdrug stores it also comes with saline drops in the box.hope this helps.

BroccoliSpears · 30/10/2007 13:00

Apparently some brave mummies SUCK the snot out of their baby's nose.

Unfortunately I just don't love my dd that much.

BirthdayBabe · 30/10/2007 13:03

Lol BS
Neither do I !

fondant4000 · 30/10/2007 13:06

Mmmm, I've done it Tbh the wet cotton wool worked better!

bealcain · 30/10/2007 15:57

Lou - if u dont want to invest we used the medicine syringes when thigs got really bad

terramum · 30/10/2007 16:33

I 'orally aspirated' DS's nose whenever he had a cold & had trouble feeding. I just don't see it as gross for some reason...although I know that everyone else I've come across does so I always do it in private or when they're not looking . Really quick & easy to do just before they latch on or mid feed if they become bunged up again. No fiddling about with equipment etc...tbh I'd personally rather do that than stick anything foreign up there.

bealcain · 30/10/2007 16:41

terra - am glad you feel comfortable with it. have never tried, how do u do it?

BroccoliSpears · 30/10/2007 19:17

I am not grossed out by the concept in abstract - just the actual having snot in the front of my mouth gets me a bit shuddery.

nicm · 30/10/2007 21:21

nuk do one too, looks a bit like a mini turkey baster lol!! i got it in my local chemist.

minibar · 30/10/2007 21:34

Hi there a good tip I was given is to rub some Vicks or Calrub or whatever onto your boob just above where your LO's nose will be.
It really works!

lou200 · 30/10/2007 23:06

DD let me get near her ONCE with a cotton bud with which I was able to lassoo the available part of the bogie and wind it out of her nostril like a piece of spaghetti. I think she was just curious to see what I was up to. Thanks for your messages. I feel calmer and a lot less anxious. Have just expressed for the night so time for a G&T..............

bealcain - literally place mouth over nose & suck...results in instantly cleared nasal passage...any stubborn dried bits can be picked off by hand or wipes with a cloth
