When did your baby's fussy feeding get better?

Hi all. Bit down in the dumps. Today I decided to give up BFing after a long, hard 4 months. I tried EVERYTHING, we had a good couple of weeks but in the end DD was just feeding for a few mins before pulling off and screaming, poor weight gain...and the final nail in the BF coffin- thrush.

She's on omeprazole for reflux and drops for thrush. I was topping her up with formula previously and she would take the bottle fine, but now even this is a struggle. She will stop every 10ml and it takes ages to get her to even have 2oz.

Omeprazole seems to have really constipated her and to be honest it only helped at first but don't think it's doing much for her now. I've just accepted that it's one of those things babies eventually grow out of...but I'm just wondering when?? When did your refluxy babies get slightly better? And how did you manage to get milk down them without appearing to force feed? DD is 4 months and if she is like this now, I am really worried about what she will be like with solids. Her reflux isn't terrible- she sleeps fine in the day and is fine most of the time on her back. I wonder if it's esophageal thrush? Who knows. Just in search of a bit of positivity and hope :(

Have you ruled out cow's milk protein allergy? That sounds really tough OP.

Sorry forgot to add that my refluxy babies were both completely different as soon as I had figured out and eliminated the allergens.

She has confirmed CMPA so I've been dairy free for ages- it helped for a little while but everything just went downhill after her 12 week jabs. She's on an amini acid formula now

Amino acid *

Are you avoiding soy as well as dairy? Apparently the proteins are vert similar, so babies who have CMPA are often allergic to soy as well. And soy is in so many things you wouldn’t even think of.

Sending you lots of sympathy - it sounds really tough Flowers

Which amino acid formula? My DS was also allergic to coconut which is in neocate. We needed alfamino.

Gigi10 · 20/01/2021 12:57

Yep avoiding soy too.
We are on alfamino

I'm bf a 5 month old with query cmp/s allergies and reflux. It is so so difficult you are an absolute trooper for managing 4 months.

What dose of omperazole are you on? We had a brief relief in symptoms at 1.4 my/kg when she outgrew that dose the gp only did the weight adjustment and it didn't make any improvements. We saw a different GP after a reaction to her 4month jabs and he put her up to 3mg/kg we had a few weeks with less symptoms, we've had it weight adjusted but now on the max total dose. We have gaviscon as well but have to get lactulose as well due to constipation

My lo feeds best overnight or just after a nap when we are having more reflux symptoms, I have to put her the sling to get her to sleep as we mostly feed to sleep. We also find that keeping her in the same position she fed in, as soon as I move her from the feeding position to upright she's sick.

I'm holding on to the idea that it will get better once she is 6 months

What flow teat are you using? We had to move up to a faster flow one around that age I think. Can't help about the reflux unfortunately but now we are weaning if any bottles aren't finished I use them to make the purées etc so it's another way to get the formula in if they are being fussy. I hope your little one settles soon, it sounds so hard
