I think I'm done breastfeeding...

Hello. DD is nearly 18 months. I have loved breastfeeding her but I think I am ready to stop now. The problem is that if I sit down for 30 seconds, she immediately starts pulling at my top and cries if I stop her. She probably feeds about 4-5 times a day but usually short and I'm not sure if she actually gets anything half the time. No night feeds since just after 1 year.

Any advice on winding down? Or is it best to just stop altogether? Other than first thing in the morning or if she has hurt herself and needs comforting, I don't offer it any more but as I say she always looks for it.

Food intake is good and she also happily drinks cows milk.

Thanks all!

I had to just stop abruptly one day around the same age for reasons I won't bore you with. It's not how I would have liked to have done it, but it really worked and baby was fine! I wore a non nursing bra, clothing they couldn't really get into easily, and dad did bedtimes for a few nights instead of me feeding to sleep. Worked much better than expected!

DD1 I started avoiding it or reducing the time. Whenever her sister fed she wanted some as well. By the end she would feed like 3 seconds!

I would just stop cold turkey. That's what I did with both of mine and within 2 days it was just fine.

I was lucky mine had a cold so we rocked to sleep instead and that was that. I also still used a feeding pillow that dc would bring to me when wanting a feed so I threw it away!

I did the same at 20 months - cold turkey. First night was 15 mins screaming, then next night 10, then 5, then nothing. No king term effects and my first good nights sleep for a long time!

Thanks everyone. I am leaning towards just stopping altogether. She doesn't feed to sleep in the evenings, she has a bottle of cows milk then goes into cot awake so that is ok. I will invest in some thick high-neck tops although she has been remarkably good at getting past anything I am wearing so far Smile

I never said 'no' but every time DD asked I said 'later' and that was enough to distract her. I think you're going to have to keep on the move for a bit if you get pounced on.
High necked tops also a good idea!
