Five month old wants to sleep latched on

I’m so so tired, and posting this in the hope that maybe someone has some “been there, it got better” type reassurance....
Nearly 5 month old DS has always been a crap sleeper but things have reached new heights of crapness last few days. It’s become harder and harder to settle him into a deep sleep so I can’t transfer him to his sidecar crib, I just lie down BFing and he remains latched the whole time from about 3am til 7am. I hate it! I worry that I’m so exhausted I might roll over onto him in my sleep or the duvet might go over his head. I can’t sleep properly as can’t move. Has anyone else experienced this? When / how did it improve? We tried pick up put down last night - it’s working well at bedtime - but he was having none of it and it was a bit stressful for all concerned.

Have you tried a dummy? My 5 month old is the same. I put my finger in her mouth to break the latch, and slide in dummy before fully removing latch. She's used to the dummy though, so if your baby isn't then maybe introduce it during the day. I was desperate for my daughter to take it for the same reason so I just kept offering it again when she spat it out and she eventually started sucking on it!

Thank you @mschatterbox We did try one when he was tiny but he wasn’t keen, and I’ve been reluctant to try again to introduce one now as it seems a bit old? But you’re right - it might work... hmm....
