Weaning toddler

DD is 20 months now and I really want to stop breastfeeding. Usually she feeds before sleep (nap if I'm there and bedtime) and during the night at least once although usually twice. I just don't know really know how to go about stopping as during the night she's inconsolable until she gets a breastfeed.

Any tips or advice on what to do? Do I try and drop the daytime feeds first or the night feeds? Do I just stop completely and see what happens? I'm worried if I stop suddenly I'll end up with mastitis as I had that a couple of months ago.

I’m trying with my 23 month old something called don’t offer, don’t refuse. I realised I was unconsciously giving him a lot of cues to feed. For example, after bathtime I would settle the cushions where I always sat and put my book there. In the morning I take him to our bed. Now I go straight from the bath to story time on the floor, avoiding the couch for now, and straight from the cot to the breakfast table. He’s still asking sometimes but I’m feeding about half as much.

Thanks @GirlCalledJames, that seems like a good place to start. I probably do the same with a certain routine and she'll then expect a feed so I maybe need to look at that. Tonight when she was in bed she asked for another feed and I usually would have given one but tonight I didn't and she did settle without it, but wasn't happy! It's hard knowing how much to cut down without upsetting her as well.
