Do I need to wipe off Miconazlole cream before feeding?

I am BF and we both have thrush. I also have reddened hot spot on breast so GP says I have mastitis too and has prescribed antibiotics which surely is going to make thrush worse!!!!

GP said she was unsure whether I have to clean off cream prior to feeding.. leaflet doesnt say and I cant get hold of HV. Anyone know???

mastitis can go by itself if you are not feeling fluey yet, there are things you can do to help it, massage while feeding etc. If you do need them you can always take pro-biotics after to help build up the good bacteria to avoid getting more thrush.

I don't know about the thrush cream, how is it meant to be clearing up in the baby's mouth then? If I were you I'd ring La Leche League helpline and speak to a breastfeeding councellor. There are lots of answerphones but if you keep re-dialling the number it goes to different people till someone is in. Hope you feel better soon.

baby has Nystatin drops for his mouth. Thing is I am sure its ductal thrush as I dont have sore nipples just excruciating pain following feeding. Am reluctant to take the antibiotics so will try without for now. Thanks you

It's rubbish that your GP just didn't know though isn't it? I would check for peace of mind. Those bf councellors know everything, they are all mums who have bf themselves and then beeen trained on every aspect of breastfeeding. They're great, and so friendly. Cabbage leaves really help with pain too.

Yes I must admit I left the GP feeling exasperated. I have looked at natural remedies for treating thrush/mastitis on kellymom and am going to try taking high dose garlic [smelly emoticon] and avoid the antibiotics for now as I dont have any other symptoms apart from the red/hot spot. I am still trying to get through to LLL. Thanks for your help.
