Reflux? Baby clearly in pain after feed

Hi,

My friend is really having a tough time of it. She has a truely beautiful 4 mths old DD but she is very unsettled and is usually very distressed for about 1 and a half hours after feeding. My friend has tried infacol etc but is at her wits end. The HV is not much use. Also my friend is so fed up of having the baby who is always screaming & sick she has stopped going to her local parent & baby group because she felt out of place amongst all the perfect mums and babies. She is beginning to feel that she doesn't want to go out anywhere in case she starts screaming.

I was lucky & had none of these issues with DS so I really can't offer her any advice. But I'm hoping that someone here can help.

TIA!

Has she spoken to GP ? Does she do the basic things liek keep her upright, prop the cot/mattress up at an angle, use a sling etc She could try a milk thickener (if ff or using ebm), a thicker formula or something like Gaviscon but she needs medical advice and/or prescription. Alternatively could it be an intolerance? Sometimes it improves on weaning , sitting or walking.

Chocolate,

Is you friend bfing or FF?

Trinaj · 09/09/2007 21:00

Sounds strange i know but my my ds1 was allergic to infacol and although he didn't cry in pain, he was always sick after a feed until I discovered this, and then cried very soon after because he was hungry.
I used gripe water instead and white formular for a while - not sure the white formular helped but stopping the infacol did.
HTH?

The baby could be lactose intolerant. My two DS had this and had the symptoms you describe. When formula feeding you can get a milk on prescription and if BF I cut out milk products completely and like magic all the colic and crying disappeared literally overnight.

HTH

If she is bfing;
she may have an overactive letdown/oversupply.. which is causing wind.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have only just managed to get back to this thread. She is bfeeding. I don't think she has tried cutting out dairy but I'll see what she thinks. I would have though it was worth a go. I'm not sure if she's still using the Infacol as it wasn't helping but will find out.

Thanks everyone!

chocolate shoes - sounds like cows milk protein intolerance to me. I had this with DS2. Have a look at my thread about it here (I was at wits end). Particularly read my last 'update' post www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=8&threadid=297027#7239548

We had it confused wtih reflux, overactive supply/letdown. But giving up dairy really was like a miracle. He became a totally different child.
