5 1/2 week old having roughly 30-32 ounces per day..will he be fat?

just worked it out - he is having lots of feeds every 2 hours average totaling 30-32 ounces

am i destined to have a fat baby???

argh!!! worried now - didn't realise how much he was actually having - but he always cries and cries if i don't feed him!!!!

is that a lot ? If he isn't piling on weight or constipated don't worry. They have a growth spurt at around 6 weeks so need a lot of calories.

apparently it is the max a formula baby should have even at 4-6 months!!!!!!!!

Honestly, bear with it , it will change (btw it probably depends what you read where and when !). btw I bet he does n't actually consume that much between puking and whatever he may leave.

no you wont my little man was on large bottles at that age it does seem to stop as they get older

i too was worried but he turned out fine when he got to about 3 months then it calmed down the ounces didn't seem to go up but you could ask hv about giving milk for hungrier babies as they wouldn't need as many ounces then

thanks so much for the replies - this matter has actually got me rather worried

yes LO is putting on weight rather steadily - but don't know if it is too fast or normal

will ask my HV today - but i really find her of not much help at all..totally non commital in her replies

the hungry baby formula may be a good suggestion

i am suddenly wondering if little one does NOT have reflux - but that all his digestive discomfort may be stemming from him over eating formula

though trying to tell him that when he his screaming his little head off!! we only feed on demand as far as we can tell!!

reflux babies can comfort feed - my DS was never off my boob with his silent reflux
don't put him on hungry baby milk as this can further upset his tummy
if your HV is not helpful, get to your GP
keep a diary for three days and see when and how much he is drinking, if he is sick/crying etc

@ bumbly: DD3 is the same age almost exactly (23/07/07) and is consuming about that much too, but she takes anything between 4 and 6 oz over 6 feeds in 24 hours. She is certainly getting bigger a lot faster than the other two. In fact DD2 was the opposite and I sometimes didn't get 20 oz into her over 24 hours. I'm not getting flustered about this having seen both ends of the spectrum. DD2 is now a perfectly normal sized and strong healthy 3Y0 and still doesn't have a big appetite.

I say don't worry. And a fat baby may not be an overweight child.

will post weight later today as he is being weighed in half an hour

but last week he weighed 4.07 kgs

have kept a diary of when he feeds etc since birth and no correlation when he is sick...sometimes it happens when he has had a big feed but sometimes not!

argh!!

so not only is LO consiming loads but he is doing it over 10 feeds a day

been like this since birth - on a good day (happened twice i think) he had 7 feeds -otherwise usually 9-10 feeds per day

exhuasted

together with fact he never wants to lie down flat and have to hold him all the time

bit tired and low today

not wanting to lie down flat is a classic relux sign
I would think about getting him on meds (domperidone and ranitadine) or at least starting on infant gaviscon
what i can say, was when my DS was on meds he was a different baby - could sleep, no screaming during feeds etc

you need to get the infant gavsicon from your GP
you can also try a thickener for the milk (carobel) which you can get from your pharmacy
the other meds i mentioned need to be px by a Paed so get a emergency referall from your GP

We had Thick and Easy - a starch based thickener used in SCBU's apparently, basically like cornflour. Trouble is that it then takes longer to feed and you need to use variable teats (with cross instead of holes) to allow it through , which can make for more frustration and thicker spew. We gave up on it after a while (I was still mainly bfeeding so used it in ebm and occasional formula). Was good for thickening sauces though

Bumbly, i make DS over 10lb.

A rough guide is 2-3ozs of milk per lb in weight so 20-30ozs over 24hrs you can then divide that by the number of feeds to get an average volume per feed.

Try not to move him about after a feed and rub his back not pat to minimise reflux discomfort and definately see the gp.

Like RubySlippers said, reflux babies can want to feed all the time as the milk soothes the burning in their throat. Definitely see GP, you can try gaviscon first as that can work well on its own. If he won't be lain down, you could try propping the head of his cot up so he is lying on a slope, this could make him more comfy if he has reflux. Have you got a sling?
