First time we tried for weeks but sever tongue tied that didn’t get cut for 2 weeks and then refusal from baby meant we never got there and instead expressed exclusively for first 12 weeks before introducing formula (which saved my sanity)

Baby number 2 is coming in 5 months and I’m now wondering - do I buy the bottles and breast pump anyway?

Last time we didn’t buy any of this until we decided we needed them after he was born as I had no plans to bottle feed

This time around id love to as being hooked up to the pump for 8 hours each day affected my mental health so badly.

Did anyone who couldn’t the first time manage to easily the next time?

My first was tongue tied, my second wasn't so it's not a given OP Smile

I really struggled to breastfeed with my first and it became a real emotional burden. I decided to bottle feed after 6 weeks even though I felt very pressurised by the midwives to carry on trying.

I was worried about it the second time around but thought I'd give it a try and move straight on to bottles if it wasnt working without giving myself a mental breakdown in the process.

But second time round it was the easiest thing ever.

I'd say give it a try and if it doesn't work it doesn't work. A fed baby is best - doesn't matter how it's done.

Even if your second has a tongue tie too and a lip tie depending on the mechanics he may be able to breastfeed. It’s often a matter of luck with ties - for example DC has severe tongue and lip ties but has always been able to latch strongly. Hurt like Hell initially but with a lot of nipple cream and support I was able to bf - with ties you often need to express too to in case of weight loss / weight gain problems so having a pump handy isn’t a bad thing. I would get a breastmilk collector too (Haakaa or Lanisoh) as it makes pumping go faster as you can nurse / pump at the same time as catching the let down from your other breast.
