She cluster feeds all evening [well about every 2 hours, as opposed to every 3 in the day] and then sleeps from 11.30/12 until 7 am ish. last night her last feed was at 10.30pm and she slept unti 8am DD1 never did this, and i'm not sure whether to be overjoyed or concerned! aren't night feeds essential to keep milk supply up in the early weeks, or do the evening feeds count as night feeds?

yours,
Confused of Dorset

My thought would be that your supply should surely cope with your own baby's feeding pattern.

Ds dropped a night feed at a similar age and I got a good slapping for worrying about it on here .

I think it's ok as she's obviously getting what she needs in the evening. If she decides to change her mind and feed in the night again your supply will up itself to meet the demand.

yup, i knew i was worrying over something most people would be rejoicing at .... part of the job though innit!

No doubt the books would say that to keep up your milk supply your would need to feed at night. However I reckon your dd is a very efficient feeder and filling herself up when she is cluster feeding.

It's obviously working well for both of you, so if it aint broke, don't fix it!!

My DD was very similar and it didn't affect my milk supply; she started sleeping through from about 5 weeks. Your body seems to adapt to whatever situation the baby creates. Enjoy the sleep!

I was advised it takes 6wks to sort your milk supply & then it's supply & demand. I was also told that baby sleeps at night as she has enough during the day, including the cluster feeds pre-bedtime.
I would be overjoyed, I was after the above reassurance from hv, weight & nappies ok so relish in the fact that she sleeps!
If she's hungry in the night she will wake for feeding, if she aint hungry she will sleep!
Your baby sounds like mine was at that age.... oh the joy of sleeping!!

Thanks for the reassurance - will get her weighed next week just to be sure, but will continue to enjoy the kip. No doubt next month she'll be doing something completely different and I'll be worrying about that

Bodkin, my DD was exactly same as yours. HVs and midwives suggested I wake her to feed her at first... but I ignored them as it just seemed such a ridiculous thing to do. She fed constantly all evening though and was on the breast from 7 to 11 before passing out til 6 or 7. They're all different. My nephew feeds regularly 3 hourly throughout day and night. Enjoy that long stretch I say!
