I've just gone back to work and my ds (6 months)is having formula while I'm there and then I'm b/f in the morning, when I return and his frequent night feeds. The problem is that he's gone from being 1 nice yellow poo a day to up to 8 with a number in the night. Also they vary in colour from yellow to green. He's had a bottle of formula before (as in the occasional night feed) although not this much.

Does anyone know why this is and how to stop it? He's on SMA Gold. I've tried individual cartons of aptimil and farleys but they don't seem to make a difference.

I'm the world's most useless expresser (I have 4oz in the freezer atm gathered over 6 x 40 min sessions, have tried 2 different pumps and got advice from b/f counsellors) so there's no way I can manage to express at work, have enough for him and not lose my job for not working.

I haven't started him on solids yet because I wanted to get the bottles sorted before doing that.

All advice gratefully received.

Could it be a stomach bug? When DD, 9 months, started at nursery she got, and still gets, lots of lurgies. She always has green poo when she's under the weather and if there's a lot and its quite frequent and watery then that could be it. I think green poo comes from when things rush through their digestive system and aren't properly digested which can be caused by a lot of mucus being swallowed if they have a cold or some other bug. She had green poo when she was breastfed from time to time and still does now she's on formula. People also link it to teething because of swallowing the extra saliva that teething causes.

He has his first cold and loads of dribble from teething so maybe that's it. Thanks!

My ds had exactly this, went from a poo every couple of days to 6+ a day, at around 5 months old. I was pretty worried at the time, but it did pass (scuse the pun) after about a week or so. Looking back, I think it was a mix of diff things - a bit of a bug, plus there were a few changes going on at the time, we'd been abroad staying with my parents for a month, and just got home, so I guess my milk might have changed a bit because of the different water and diet, and what with adjusting to that and climate.. I reckon poo indicates a variety of things, and if your ds is going through some changes at the moment, his poo might just be a reflection of that. As long as he is in reasonably good spirits, and is eating fairly well, don't worry, just wait and keep an eye on things. That was the advice I was given and it helped me. Hope it turns out ok for you too
