Is he just a whinge?

DS is 5 weeks old and formula fed.
When we stop feeding him to burp him he cries, not loudly, more of a whinge. Once he's full he settles just fine. I thought maybe reflux but if that was the case surely he wouldn't settle after his feed? I'll speak to my health visitor but my gut says he's just complaining we've stopped feeding him?

Is he draining the bottle? If he is you should be offering more milk.

He usually finishes the bottle, not always. I wouldn't say he drains it, by the time he's near the end he slows down. Once he's finished he's calm and sleepy. According to NHS guidelines he's getting as much as he's allowed in a day. It's just when we stop part way through to burp him he kicks up a fuss.

He's hungry and you have stopped to burp him is that right? Would say quite normal

Ciwirocks · 26/12/2019 18:32

That sounds completely normal to me, he is crying because you interrupted his feed. All babies do that to my knowledge at least all mine and relatives dc’s have.

He slows down/stops feeding so I take the bottle away from him to burp him, as soon as he's been moved he'll have a wee complain.

The nhs gives guideline amounts not a maximum amount. NHS also say babies should be feed on demand. That means not when they want but as much as they want so your baby should be deciding when to stop.

I'm always second guessing myself with feeding him. I'd intended to breastfeed but that didn't work out for us. I've done as much research as I can so I hope I'm getting it right for him. When he wasn't getting enough breast milk he'd cry and wouldn't settle so I thought that because he was content between feeds then he was getting enough?

It can be a bit of a minefield with feeding babies.
If he's happy between feeds then go with that, your absolutely doing the best thing winding after a few ounces! Spare the awful cries if a baby has gulped too much air. We always fed on demand, breast or bottle. So if you wee one is wanting more offer and see how it goes 😊 remember you can save a bottle for 2 hours if that helps. If I'd known that with my first would have saved a fortune!

RunningAroundAgain · 27/12/2019 11:34

Sounds like he's just a hungry baby Erich might make him a bit impatient. But you're right to stop and burp him several times or else he'd be gulping it down and ending up in a lot of pain. Keep doing what you're doing I think. It's good practice for the toddler tantrums Wink

Thanks everyone, we ended up at out of hours last night as he was screaming and had a sore looking eye, turned out to be non related issues but he has reflux and thrush. Poor wee guy.

Oh god, poor little guy. I guess we never know what's going on with them until they're old enough to tell us, so it's a minefield! Hope they can help you in some way

Thanks @RunningAroundAgain went to the gp, we have baby gaviscon and thrush treatment too.
