my ds wont drink water any other way.He gets SO excited when I show him this little boys cup Iv purchased.Half of it goes down his bib and he coughs and chokes alot.My dp seems to think this is not good for him to keep making him choke and cough so much.Is this bad for him?

I don't think so. Ds like to drink from a proper cup too and at 6 months he wouldn't take a bottle or a sippy cup. I found that you can reduce the spluttering by using a see-through glass and only letting him have very small sips at a time.

For your sake though, I'd keep trying the cups with lids - ds can have one now and can drink it himself (I'd recommend one with handles on for this reason)

It doesn't sound as though it will do him any harm. My ds1 was born in the 70's and we were told to wean them early and do away with bottles by six mths, so he was taking all fluids from a an open cup by then! It takes them a little while to learn not to plunge their entire face into the drink but they soon get the idea. Try using a cup with a smaller diameter so he can't get too much of his face into it and also keep the cup at a shallow angle as he drinks.

My DS is 8.5mths and will only drink his juice from a cup, it's called a Doidy cup and it's slanted so it's easier for him to drink out of. I shouldn't worry mum2oliver, DS was and still is a little bit messy when he drinks from his cup but I just let him have little sips and this helps.

mum2oliver, try a Heinz baby basics cup from Boots. As well a spouted lid, this comes with an insert that you can use without the spout. So he has the experience and feeling of drinking from an open cup, but the see-through submerged lid (with little holes in) stops too much water coming out at once. It's a really clever contraption and dd loves hers.
Would not have thought spluttering etc would harm him in the slightest. Does your dp know that babies also enjoy eating carper fluff/baby wipes/drinking their bath water etc ?

Having a nightmare with cups myself but I think as long as your ds is cheerful and enjoys it, there's no problem - for him maybe it's like diving into a swimming pool. My ds suddenly learned how to put his head back and swallow in a more controlled way, after about 2 months of him giggling into the cup and dribbling most of it down his front. I then ruined it by getting excited and doing too much with different types of cup. back to the drawing board.
