Hi
My son is 7 weeks old and born via emergency c-section at 12 days over due from failed induction.
For the first 7-10 days, he was like clockwork in terms of feeding and sleeping and seemed content 95% of the time and only really cried when we changed his nappy.
He was breastfed for 3 days in hospital and since then has been solely formula fed (cow and gate normal formula)
Since then, his feeding and toilet habits seem to have changed dramatically and I dread each feed.
From around weeks 2-4, we thought he had colic as he had hours where he would scream hysterically for unknown reasons with legs drawn up and appearing to be in agony. He would only sleep for 5 minutes at a time during the time so it was a constant cycle of settling him whilst he was hysterical for him to wake up within 5 minutes. 9 times out of 10 if you tried to put him down in his Moses he would scream and wake up. We struggled to ever get any wind up so we thought it was likely to be colic so after speaking to the health visitor, we used infacol and changed over to cow and gate colic milk. As well as being unsettled, he appeared to be hungry around an hour and a half after feeds so would scream for what I believe would be that reason so inbetween him being unsettled, not bringing wind up easily and not sleeping properly, he would then give signs that he was hungry shortly after a feed probably 90% of the time so it felt like I was constantly feeding him. His night feeds were fine at this time (bed at 11, up at 2 for a feed and 5 for a feed very consistently and no trouble settling him between feeds)
Once we reached week 5-6, we noticed an improvement and he seemed happier between feeds and I started replicating nighttime routine for his naps and this helped improve naps from 5 mins to nearer to 20 and occasionally closer to an hour (still occasionally unsettled so it would take 6/7 attempts to settle him back down before he would sleep for a stretch longer than 5 minutes). Family all noticed a difference and we all thought he had grown out of his ‘colic’ stage.
For the last 5 days or so, he has begun to be unsettled again between feeds and it takes a good hour to get a bottle in him between him screaming hysterically, drawing his legs up, going completely straight and generally looking like he is in agony. He has also begun to be sick with most feeds whereas previously he was perhaps sick every 3 days if that. Still hard to wind. His poos are explosions and are green/yellow and quite wet at times. He usually cries when trying to go and seems to be very uncomfortable. He also has quite loud wind which I often mistake for him going toilet due to the sound and smell but it is just wind.
Some nights he is very hard to wake up for a last feed before we all go to bed, it can take a good 15 minutes to wake him up but his night feeds are generally consistent at 2am and 5am without the screaming and discomfort until around 8am onwards.
When winding him he throws his whole body backwards so it’s hard to get a good grip on him which stresses us both out and he just screams.
He hasn’t finished a 4oz bottle for a good few days now and is feed roughly every 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on whether we are in the house or out and about with the occasional 1-2oz top up within an hour of his last feed. Sometimes he screams and screams and I give him a bottle and he takes probably a third of an ounce and falls asleep.
Otherwise he is a happy boy, he smiles a lot and is very vocal and responsive to singing etc. But we don’t get happy spells between every feed (not even for 5-10 mins) it just seems to be a battle for the majority of feeds.
I am seeing the doctor tomorrow for our post natal check so will write a list of issues we are facing for their advise but I was hoping someone could offer any help? His father was severely lactose intolerant as a baby and still is as an adult
