Baby bringing up whole feeds - what does this mean and how worried should I be?

DS is 5 weeks and just started throwing up his feeds (he is BF) yesterday morning. Same problem today. I think he also has diarrohea (sp?) but it's hard to tell as he always has it. Any advice??

Have you spoken to your health visitor or doctor, it might be advisable if your DS is vomiting and has diarrohea.

My 17 week old DD has been a champion puker since birth. I was told to fill a bottle with water and throw it on the ground so I could judge just how much she was throwing up. It turned out it wasn't whole feeds for us but around 20ml. We discovered she was puking as she had trapped wind so we started on infacol. It worked for over a month but now we have stopped and the vomiting is back.

Babies can throw up a lot of Breast Milk as they tend to over eat for comfort. An ounce can look like much more! The bottle of water on the floor trick is a good idea. At 5 weeks he is probably just getting the hang of being efficient and being a bit greedy

My DD had mucus/clear/greeny coloured poo when she had the runs. Is it mucus like?

If in any doubt go to the GP. They will see you today if you tell the receptionist it is your baby who is ill. If they advise you to stop bfing please obviously listen to them but most GPs are out of date and do not understand BFing well. In many cases you need to keep offering feeds. If that happens come back and post again and one of the BF experts will be along later I am sure and can advise you on BFing a poorly baby. (they told me to keep feeding and it worked but each situation is different).

hi naturopath, my dd began doing the same thing at around 4-5 weeks old - she had a slight reflux problem - like what sushipaws said, she had trapped wind which was causing her to throw up - we tried the infacol too and found it fantastic (again, it only seems to work for so long) - you just give baby 1 dropper before feed and helps burp easier - also I would echo what others have said - it more than likely isnt the whole feed - I used to think the same, it looks like an awful lot - but through a spoon of milk on the table and you will be suprised at how much it looks.

I would get him checked out though, for your own peace of mind. best of luck x hope your recovering well x

Actually saw the doc yesterday, he basically told me to keep an eye on it but to keep feeding him. Am already using Infacol so don't think that will work. I guess there's nothing else to do for now?

Thanks everyone.. yes, it is every feed, but strangely, not during the night.

Hi naturopath, my little one has reflux and brings up most of her feed. Sounds v.similar, she was like that from about 3 weeks old and is 12weeks today. We had her on infacol and she now has gaviscon infant. Def contact your GB or HV. Gaviscon helps, but she is still v sicky.

He also breaks off from feeding to scream like he is in pain (like a cat yelping) - the pain seems to come in waves for about 10 mins at a time.. he is inconsolable. Sometimes wants to feed less, sometimes more. Pushes my breast away when having a pain attack - sometimes accompanied by bringing up small amounts of milk (has now stopped brining up large amounts), also hiccups, coughing, strange breathing..

I am getting more and more convinced this is reflux - does that sound right? What can I do (other than see my dr)? Does it always last until solids / age 1??
