I want to stop breastfeeding. Baby won't drink any kind of milk from any kind of bottle. So what to I do?

DC2 is 8months. Loves solids (mainly chips, spicy rice, cheese sandwiches, yoghurt and fruit), loves tap water from any kind of bottle, skippy cup, straw cup. Unlike DC1 who happily mix fed from 2 weeks old until 13mo DC2 has only ever tolerated being breastfed, bar one or two 'bottles' ounces of formula around 2/3/4 months.

Will now not drink formula, expressed milk or cows milk from any of the vessels listed above. Refuses. Looks bemused. Not happening.

Only it's looking like I'm unexpectedly going to having to go back to work in 8 weeks.

She will be fine with solids and water ... right

Should have said, despite the going back to work thing I'm about done with breastfeeding anyway. She will only feed from one side which is making feel like crap because I'm very obviously lopsided and my emotional health is taking a bit of a battering as I've probably only spent a total of about 8 hours away from her in 10min -60 min blocks in 8 months.

Yes she'll be fine. Plenty of good quality yoghurt and cheese will suffice. After a while she'll accept milk from a cup, once she's forgotten where it used to come from.

I'd call one of the BFing Helplines OP. The BFC will help you to stop BFing in a way that reduces your risk of mastitis and helps LO to adjust Smile

We had to use a sippy cup to get both of ours off bfeeding at around the same age - they would not have a bottle!

I had this problem when my DD was the same age. I dropped feeds gradually over a month or so. My DD was refusing the bottle and I tried everything! In the end I even put her in the baby carrier facing out and went for a walk outside, while putting the bottle in her mouth! I’d read on the internet that distraction can work! In the end we got there by being persistent.

Gold top/Jersey/Guernsey milk, which I know you can buy from Sainsbury's and Morrisons (I haven't looked in other supermarkets so possibly can be bought there too). I was advised by my friend as she had the same issue, and I've just tried it on my dd13months as she wouldn't touch blue top with a barge pole either! I've only been using it during the day for the last 2 days and its working for us.

Sippy cup.

There was another post recently on a similar topic, and just to echo what I said there, you should NOT be tempted to give your child loads of cow's milk, yogurt, cheese--they can have small amounts of these at 8mo, but if you start giving them lots as a substitute for BM/formula it can cause serious iron deficiency.

My baby hated bottles too, so we mixed BM/formula with baby cereal and she had it off a spoon.

Had exactly the same with my ds2 at the same age.

In the end I went cold turkey. I just kept telling him the milk was all gone from the boob. But there's this delicious milk in this special cup...

We used this cup/bottle and made the milk as close a symbol possible to room temp.

Tried every milk under the sun too-goats milk went down well and over the course of a few weeks I started to add cows milk to it until he ratio of cows milk was higher than goats and eventually it was a full bottle of cows milk.

Terrible typing, sorry.

We also used the nuk latex teats and had some success with that, but the boots bottle was the real winner.

I could have written this post word for word! I feel your pain!

I'm wondering about trying nipple shields has anyone had any luck with that?

Failing that think it might have to be cold turkey which I'm not so keen on.

My daughter won't take from any type of bottle have tried various formulas and she won't even take my milk from any vessel so pumping isn't even an option Confused

Give her milk in a cup instead of a bottle and only offer her the side she has been avoiding and see if you can sort the lopsided issue whilst she weans off.

I bf for 15 months, am a nurse and went back to work when ds was 9 months or so and was worried as he wasn’t fussed on a bottle at all. So had cups of milk and solids and bf when I was there and thrived.

It may be you just have to stop completely and get other people to feed her bottles for now, mam were the only ones I could get my son to use even then it was a struggle he went straight to a cup at 13 months anyway. Hard going though for you, leaving your baby.
