Baby been struggling to nurse ever since my milk supply regulated and my breasts became 'soft’

I seem to be experiencing a really uncommon, complex breastfeeding issue that started when my baby was 2 months old (he's now 7 months - that's a whooping 5 months we've been experiencing these issues), when my breasts became 'soft' due to my milk supply regulating. He went from feeding very well from a 'full' breast to suddenly struggling to feed from a 'soft' breast (latching on and then pulling off, thrashing around, sucking really hard and impatiently to stimulate a letdown, sucking very hard to remove milk - generally struggling to access milk the way he used to before). It’s as if the whole mechanism of breastfeeding changed when my breasts became soft, and suddenly my baby didn’t know how to do it anymore. The only time he'll feed effectively is in his sleep, as a dream feed. He won't accept a bottle. It's gotten steadily worse over time (I could go into a lot of depth about how difficult it's been, but that's for another thread). Support has been hard to access because the issue seems too complex for local support groups to tackle, and I don't have the financial resources to access more specialist support (from an IBCLC). Anyway, my question - does anyone share my experience? I feel like I'm the only mother in the world who has this experience...

Hi, sorry to hear it’s not easy. I’m not quite in the same situation but can relate, my DD2 is 3 months, and struggles when my breasts are soft, seems to get frustrated like you say and pulls on and off, pulls at the breast etc. I get lots of blocked ducts etc as she generally has a pretty terrible latch. She had a tongue tie revised at 5 week but still crap. However for me I have oversupply and my breasts are only really soft when they are quite ‘empty’, so I am not dealing with this all the time like you are. With my first I also had oversupply which didn’t regulate until over a year in.

Does/did your DS have tongue tie? I imagine you must’ve had a lot of trouble with blockages too if he’s so fussy he’s not draining the breast well.

I’m sure you’ve tried everything but I find Dd feeds best when she’s only just started to wake, and still sleepy.

Flowers to you

Hi @Merename

I know this is super old! But I'm in the exact same position with my 8mo... finding it super hard to feed and can only when he's basically asleep. My boobs just seemed to regulate overnight.

I'm looking around for others who have experienced this- but can't seem to find much!

How did you get on?

Thanks for your time- if you're still around.

A stressed mama.
