Colleague's view of breastfeeding

Apparently, the thought of doing it makes her toes curl, she informed me recently.

Now, before anyone flames her, I have to say she is a genuine, lovely person, but is not maternal at all and has no children. She hadn't really thought about it in any depth.

I was quite shocked and said so, but we had a general (goodnatured) conversation about breastfeeding (I bf my three for a fair while) and thought no more of it.

Anyway, she went home and had a discussion with her mum about it, mum told her basically she was talking rot, lol. (good ole mum).

Colleague is late 50s, and she really is lovely.

nice that she came back and told you her mum had said she was talking rubbish.

I thought it was hilarious (in a nice way).

My best colleague comment on bf was when a lovely elderly prof who used to be an anthropologist said 'You'll be breastfeeding for three years of course?' I said no, 6 months, and she said 'Oh, I must have been thinking of Burma.'

At the risk of shocking people, I'm one who's toes curl at the thought of breastfeeding, although I am maternal, have dd and have thought about it. Not fussed in the slightest if someone does it in front of me, but the thought of doing it myself gives me the heebiejeebies!

Yes, I felt like that too, before dd was born. I knew I had to give it a try for her sake, but I hated the thought. When she was born, I got myself ready and cringeing, latched her on (easy, thank god). I've been hooked from that moment on and still going 16 months later. Looking back, I find it impossible to believe I ever felt that way. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

I honestly can't see what you are all freaked out about. It is what they are there for you know?

I could never the sense in bottle feeding though - why you ladies would choose to go through all that faff when you have a perfectly good built in feeding device, is beyond me.

My colleagues are using my breastfeeding as a pursuasive tool to get our stingy employer to buy us a water-cooler. (They don't know I stopped a couple of months ago!). Encouraging for a bunch of lads.

I'm struggling to make the connection between breastmilk and water cooler - are the men in the office going to lap at it lovingly because they feel left out?

my friend can't stand the thought either - she hates her nipples being touched at all. She wants to have children at some point and her dh, a doctor, is very pro bf so she feels she has to but I think she is going to find it very very hard. Her mum was of the generation that were encouraged to ff and I think this has definately had some influence as she doesn't like it when I bf in front of her.

Squeakybub - that's utter tosh. If you are doing it right it really doesn't hurt at all.

Re name. Thought of it in the shower. It took two months to come up with a half decent name.

Squeakybub - well that may have been your experience and that may have been the advice you received from a bfc but I had no pain and neither did any of my friends once they'd established the correct latch.

That's awful for you. But is it a reason to advocate not trying for others?

WMMC- I agree was very painful until the correct latch was established, then no pain at all- just wish I had learnt the proper technique sooner- ouch!!

Lurve the idea of a water cooler at work! Dya think I could pretend I was still bfing?? (they're only 12, 10 and 8, lol)

And I agree with toe-curling if she'd tried it comment, lol. It hurt me in the early days, remember quite clearly with DS3 in particular being in immense pain for a day or two, plus I had problems with DS2 feeding, so know it's not for everyone and not always easy.
