11wk BF baby being sick with black/brown grains

Hi
My dd is 11wks & has very rarely been sick/possetted in the past. However, this evening she has been sick about 6 times in the last hour & half. Quite large amounts that have brown bits in that at first looks like weetabix kind of thing/mixture.
She seems grizzly but not altogether distressed, more tired Id say.
Is this anything to worry about?
Just need the mumsnetters to help me out & offer advice

I've never seen that sort of sick in my 3 and I'm not sure what it could be. I'd give nhs direct a call to see what they say or gp our of hours if you're worried.

don't know trackerc.. is she only BF?

I think you should call NHS direct anyway, since small babes can get dehydrated quite quickly if they're sick alot.

My ds had a severe tummy upset earlier his year which resulted in him vomiting a big globule of brown as well as some grainy blood. He was very ill in other ways and ended up being taken into hospital by ambulance because I panicked about the blood a lot!

Anyway, he was very ill and did need hospital because he was dehydrated with gastro enteritis BUT the blood thing turned out to be 'nothing' and is apparently common if the lining of the gut gets inflamed. The only concern I'd have in your case is if there has not been sustained sickness that explains this.

Maybe NHS direct can help with a few extra questions?

Oh yeh also she had kind of black poo yesterday & dark brown sticky poo today. totally different from normal brown/green.
do you think it might be all related?

Get on the phone to nhs direct, or go to A&E. Dont want to alarm you, but you better get this checked out. Could be bleeding stomach ulcer? Unless you have given Ferrum (iron supplement) Black poo can be a sign of poo mixed with blood... Especially if vomits dark matter.

I agree-you need to get urgent advice on this. At least ring nhs direct straight away, if not take her to a and e.

Havent given her any iron supplement. She is exclusively bf, but today she had 3oz of formula - about 5pm. she only has formula fairly rarely (approx weekly) but has had it few times before with no such symptoms.
Currently on hold to nhs direct...

glad you are talking to nhs direct.
To be honest I would be more concerned with the poo than the vomiting. Some babies find formula hard to digest. My baby would sick up more after a formula feed. Can you see the difference between just posetting up milk, and actually vomiting? The texture will look different if it is formula. However, I cannot explain the dark matter, that is a concern.

Make sure you mention both the poo and the vomiting.

Just finished. They are sending a report through to the on call gp to contact me. DD is currently gurgling & playing cos she has been woken up to check responses & for a rash etc.
In fact GP surgery just on now.

I can see how this is very worrying. however, in my experience, those brown grains are just tiny bits of dried blood where she has been retching. It sounds like the poor thing has a bug to me. but, all teh advice about making sure she doesnt get dehydrtated is very good. try not to worry too much about those grains. Altho i know that is far easier to say than to beleive.

So sorry your dd is unwell. I hope she picks up very very soon. x

if you have a muslin of babygrows with exampples of the grains on - take with you to gp in nappy sack

You guys were really helpful. Thank you.
We were admitted overnight in case it was blood in sick & stools. bloods came back normal & she never puked again plus she was her usual giggly flirty self so I was reassured by that. They think it might be a tummy bug, but no conclusions. Stool sample back later in week. Just glad to be home with a happy healthy baby x
