I posted a couple of days ago about this, and got a couple of encouraging responses, but need to spill out my woes a bit more.

DD has just got her 2 top teeth and it really hurts. I have checked out the Kellymom site and am hoping it will get better. However, at the moment I have an indentation/raw bit on my left nipple and I am not enjoying bf that much. Not really sure what to do - feed less on that side? Feed little and often? It is difficult because I have got used to breast feeding and DS wrangling (he is 3) at the same time. At the moment it is difficult to bf and concentrate on anything other than bf.

Anyway, could I have some more encouraging stories about new teeth getting less sharp please?

Cant really help, i stopped bf'ing ds1 soon after he got teeth (that wasnt the reason i stopped though). Have you tried lansinoh? Works a treat on cracked nipples so might work well for bitten nips maybe.

And at the very least I've bumped this for you!

MadamePlatypus · 14/06/2007 20:42

Thanks for bumping!

poor you, sorry, no experience, just wanted to add and bump for you. hope you manage to continue bf... is baby still biting? i hope someone can come along and be more useful than me.

mrshedgehog · 14/06/2007 20:47

madame platypus - is she actually biting you or just resting her teeth as she feeds?

My LO got her top teeth about the same time and bit me several times which was agony. After a couple of episodes of biting she just stopped - unless she wasn't really ready for the feed or got distracted.

It does get better !!

Yes, same happened to me with dd1. i had deep, wide, open gashes on both my areolas and i am actually permanently scarred as a result. the only way i got them to heal was by using these Silverette I had tried everything and it would start to heal but then when i fed her the would would open up again. The silverette healed them completely within 2 days and it never opened again.

I just hope it doesn't happen this time round too.. only good thing is that i have the silverette to fall back on again!

Hope it gets better soon for you, there is nothing worse than that toe curling nipple pain... except Mastitis!

Madame,
just thought i would clarify my situation.
i did not get sore due to dd1 biting me, it was a lazy latch - i presume. Her teeth would just contineously rub throughout the whole feed.

yellowbean · 14/06/2007 20:59

ah sorry... me not reading properly... still dont know what to suggest though. my dd didnt do this. has the latch always been poor? or just since teeth?

MadamePlatypus · 14/06/2007 21:06

Not biting, just rubbing when feeding. Thanks for the tip determination. I keep trying to work out whether her latch could be improved, but she is quite determined about feeding how she wants to feed. She also wriggles around quite a bit which doesn't make things easy.

latch has always (I think) been quite good. In comparison to others I breezed through early Bf - no mastitis and not particularly painful. However, maybe it was just a good latch as long as she didn't have top teeth.

might be worth trying to find a bf counseller who might be able to help get latch better...i'm dreading my dd2 getting teeth (any day) as her latch is already bad at 7 months... she pulls on and off and is very 'slurpy' when feeding,

fishie · 14/06/2007 21:23

i had bad latch probs with ds, which improved around 6m, just in time for teeth. he was sort of digging in top front teeth and made a nasty hole in poor nip. anyway i got round this by varying position - in fact i have ever since kept him on one side and slid him round as he kicks the keyboard otherwise.

determination · 14/06/2007 21:36

Madame,

The only way to try and improve this is to make her take a BIG mouthful of your nipple/areola.. and if possible kindof push your breast further into her mouth when she is latched. But also heal it very quickly.. Silver is fantastic. Dunno if the elastoplasts with silver would work the same as the silverette but thats an option to try!

Lovage · 15/06/2007 18:28

My understanding is that they need to change their latch once the top teeth come in. So a previously fine latch stops working right. Mine sorted it out himself over a period of about 2 weeks (and never got as bad as yours sounds) and now is absolutely fine. But might be worth going to a breastfeeding group or seeing a bf counsellor if you can.
