Breastfeeding and fake tan

Does anyone know if it is safe to use fake tan while bf? I am going to a wedding soon, and have a beautiful dress to wear, but will need to do something about my pale legs, arms and, ahm, bosom.

Well, it's fine to use while pregnant so I guess it must be OK when BFing too. Mind you, I wouldn't put it on your nipples, or even too close. The smell might well put your baby off its stride.

Thanks
Anyone else used it while bf?

yes its fine. unless you are drinking it of course

I got it done for my wedding and was advisd not to put it round the nipple area.I stuck breast pads on my bare boobs and she sprayed around them so i was able to wear my strapless dress no problem.

I am just using the malibu sun self tan gel, so I will try not to get in on nipple!

I did use a little on occasion

TBH I think in an ideal world it would be better NOT to do so - it is absorbed through the skin, as is any other product you use, and it is full of all kinds of crap - not really what you want ending up in your breastmilk ideally...

but I think you weigh these things up and consider the risk of doing it once / occasionally

it isn't like you are going to plaster it on every day

Franny, I know. I am not sure about it. I avoid as many chemicals as possible, I don't even use anti-perspirant, just Toms of Maine deoderant (and before anyone says anything i smell good). I am using Malibu sun because it is vegan, otherwise I would get a proper tan done. Just feeling a little frumpy, saggy breast feeding bras not helping, and even found myself wishing it was time to give up BF. So to cheer myself up I have painted my toes, and am thinking about tan...

Cazee I did it as I say, and I weighed it against all the other things I did / did not do

How old is your baby?

fearscape · 29/05/2007 09:23

I used fake tan when pregnant (only once ) - I checked think on DoH website or something like that and it said it was safe.

frenchleave · 29/05/2007 09:30

I use Green People self tan. It's fab, and free of nasties.

KristinaM · 29/05/2007 12:39

please dont worry about it cazee. the kellymom site is very authoritative and it says that its fine

here

I knwo what you mean about feeling frumpy, as I have been bf for teh last 3 years! Honestly, I think its a conspiracy, these rumours that you cant have a glass of wine, get your hair coloured or get a fake tan while you are BF. You deserve to look good!!! Go buy a new bra or two, get your hair done and a manicre/pedicare. Think how much you are saving on buying formula!!!!!

Great link Kristina - that would be good enough for me

we will expect to see you looking all bronzed v shortly cazee

cazee · 29/05/2007 17:21

Aww, thanks everyone, off to bronze myself now...
