ds is 9 1/2 months and has 2 b/feeds a day (first thing and after afternoon nap). he has a bit of milk from a cup last thing at night.

i'm leaving him on his own for first time next week and wondering what will happen...will i dry up? will i be v engorged?

i'm not leaking at all anymore (haven't for months), no breast pads, breasts never feel full even when i doens't fancy his afternoon feed...

what will happen? anyone? should i take a pump with me? is this the end of breastfeeding?

tia

I'm not much help, as DS is 8.5 months and is not as interested in bf as he used to be at all - he has been having about 1 bf a day for the past week but I think that's because I am sticking a nipple in his mouth and hoping he will suck!

I'm not getting at all engorged (guess there's hardly anything there now). I should think you won't feel too engorged although you might feel a bit fuller. Also not sure on the drying up thing. Think I may have dried up already

Are you doing anything nice next week?

sophable - take your pump with you so that you can express if you do get engorged (or hand express and you won't need to take pump). You will not dry up over 48 hours and your ds will be fine. I know of women who have left their babies for a week - Jasper being one of them - and resumed breastfeeding when they got home.

mears...thank you that's just what i wanted to hear...dh thinks it's time to maybe stop b/fding (really good motives: so that i don't have to get up at the crack of dawn and he can do it) but i'm not sure as i figure that it's so easy b/fding now and its the main milk the ds takes (doesn't really seem to like normal milk much tbh)...

thank you so much for replying so quickly both of you.

sophable- i went away for weekend when dd was 2months so a little younger....thank god i took my breast pump.....aaaahhhhh....i woke up after no feeding for 20 hours and i had boobs that would of put pamela anderson's to shame i looked like lolo farrari...this was exellent as normally im found wanting in the breast department...and made me look fab in my cossie.....but the pain ohh the pain,
i was pumping off amounts that a cow would of been proud of. so my advice is dont leave with out the expresser just in case.

prufrock · 12/08/2004 11:07

Not the end at all. I left dd for 3 days when she was 9 months - she was having bf morning and night at that stage, and she resumed quite happily when I got home.
I tried hand expressing in the bath whilst I was away, (mears instructions are elsewhere on the site) but just couldn't get more than a trickle. But I didn't get seriously melon like boobs until I woke up on the 3rd day (when I had to nip out and buy a new top before my first meeting because my shirt was straining so much!). Do take breast pads in case, but you should be OK without pumping.

I would need to pump. I can manage to go a day without bf but it is uncomfortable and heavy. I can imagine real pain if i were to leave it any longer.i

sophable, I'm down to two feeds a day as well and I'm pretty sure that if I went away I wouldn't need to pump. I've skipped the morning feed a couple of times without really noticing, and I've drifted down to two feeds a day without any problems of fullness. I'm planning a night away in Sept and wasn't intending to pump - was actually thinking I might take the opportunity to just finish bf....
