I got Mastitis yesterday for the 6th time, 4 times with dd1 and 2nd time with dd2.. and the pain has died down a bit but it is still blushing.. the problem is i have a MASSIVE blockage on the upper outer quadrant that i cannot shift.

I have tried;

  • Hot/cold compresses
  • massaging down to the nipple
  • hot shower
  • hot bath
  • feeding on all fours
  • feeding with chin facing the blockage
  • electric pump on full power (with nipple facing floor)
  • feeding feeding feeding
  • and the Silver breast pad

And it will not shift. PLEASE HELP what else can i do?

Gee.. I wish!

DD2 has been cluster feeding for approx 3 hours - poor thing i aint producing enough now due to the blockage and i keep puttin on the side to try and clear it.. i have just given in and gave her 4oz of EBM and she seems to be calming and settling now.

I am exhausted and am considering going to bed topless with her to cuddle up and create some prolactin!

Well done Determination, you are fab!

Determination - I had mastitis 4 times with DS1 (plus breast thrush each time) and once recently with DS2, so really feel for you. Do you know why it keeps recurring? Do you have a lot of milk, or irregular feeding patterns with the baby?

With DD, and DS2, I've had to have strict 3 hourly feeds, as its the only way I can avoid blocked ducts, by regularly timed feeds and massaging breasts before and after each feed. My ducts are always on the verge of a blockage, even if the feed is just one hour late. Some people are just prone to it

BTW if you buy Ibuprofen, get the non branded one - its much cheaper than the branded version.

foxcub · 19/05/2007 23:10

sorry, you can't get rid of me now - have you tried those breast nurse things too - they are brilliant for getting the milk moving.

shonaspurtle · 20/05/2007 00:57

Sorry you're still hurting Determination, mastitis is the pits.

I got the same line from the pharmacist in Boots when I went to buy Ibuprofen. She really made me feel like a bad mother for insisting on it, even though I told her it had been recommended by my gp and the breast feeding consultant I was seeing at the time. If you check the BNF it actually says that the amount that transfers to breast milk is too small to be harmful but some manufacturers advise against. However, as mentioned below, it is the preferred analgesic for mastitis because of the anti-inflamatory effect. It's a shame that pharmacists don't seem to know this. There must be a lot of women suffering needlessly due to poorly informed pharmacists.

Fox,

I had LOADS of milk, but fed approx every 3 hours, she seems to be emptying me tho. Just recently she started sleeping about 7 hours at night and on Thur morning i wakened engorged and expressed 6oz. It was Thur afternoon Mastitis hit me.

03.30am i have just fed her from sore side she seems to be just having half the amount i wonder if it is because the milk is thicker,,, I am now going to be a coo and use the electric pump!

Thankyou everyone for all your advice and support,, you are all fantastic

Determination

How are you feeling today - noticed you were up at 3am?

I'm afraid of getting mastitis when my baby begins to sleep through..atm its every 3 hrs on the dot, day and night...

Any luck with the expeessing? Last time I had mastitis my milk virtually dried up on the sore side - it seemed to thicken as well, so there was no foremilk . When I expressed nothing came out!! Took me a few days to get it back to a full serving as it were.

How is it going?

[big hugs]

determination · 20/05/2007 18:31

Fox,

managed to get what looked like cheese (it was orange!) from the sore side during the night whilst expressing!

It is still quite tender but much much better, have been feeding much more frequently though as my supply has drastically decreased Started taking the herbal tincture i have again to boost it though

Breastmilk cheese = delicious Khazakstani speciality if you've seen Borat.

Did you ever try the Quark? I was going to give it a go but couldn't figure out how to do so and not spend the whole day in the house.

moondog · 20/05/2007 20:34

Poor you Determination.
Hope you're finally on the mend.

foxcub · 20/05/2007 22:40

Determination - I remember the dark yellow cottage cheese well from my last bout of mastitis - and DS2 having the stuff on his lips after feeding !

I guess that's the old milk which got stuck inside and curdled!

I had to put him to the dodgy boob first at every feed for about 2 weeks until the milk got back up to a normal level again.

Keep at it!

determination · 22/05/2007 13:02

Well girls as of yesterday i have been brand new..

I managed to "Just" survive with paracetamol only and successfully cleared it without antibiotics again - done it all naturally using that silverlon breast pad

Again, i would like to thankyou all for the fantastic support i received throughout that horrible few days. You are all Amazing

Great to hear, determination; I am most as mine's flared up again today.

determination · 22/05/2007 13:32

Oh missT im so sorry to hear that..

Try and get a hold of Bella Donna - it is a homeopathic remedy and is meant to be brill for mastitis. Also so are the Booby Tubes and the Silverlon pad.. - maybe i am a freak but i just like to do it all naturally. Hang in there and keep that breast empty

Big Hugs and Healing Vibes ur way
