Periods: this can't be that strange surely? When was your last period???

I went to the GYN this week to try to sort out an episiotomy scar problem, and one of the first questions that he asked was when my last period was. I said "January, last year" and he was really shocked and assumed that I must be PG.
I was PG for 9 months, and I've been BFing for 6 and a bit. I think that he assumed that I was PG again, even when I explained. In fact, even the fact that I was there because I couldn't have sex didn't convince him!
Surely a GYN would be familiar with the concept of BFing suppressing ovulation? Am I that strange that it's be so long?

What were he is qualifications? are you sure he wasn't the porter or something?

MrsTittleMouse · 02/05/2007 14:42

Maybe I should direct him to MN!

MrsTM I think this is another good reason to complain about your misinformed and ignorant gyn.

Hm, you're right. He didn't actually say "you're pregnant", but he did look vvv shocked and kept whittering on and on about contraception until I explained to him just exactly HOW infertile DH and I are.
Personally I'm thrilled that it's been so long. I think it's natural justice for the 6 blooming weeks of postnatal bleeding.

I've still had no period and DS is 8m now. Long may it continue, I hate periods, the messy, painful, grump-making blighters.

I agree with you about the 6 week bleed-fest too. In some ways it was like having all 9 months periods (plus a few future ones) all in one go

PinkTulips · 02/05/2007 15:07

my last was in april 2004

9 months preg, 9 months bf (a year really but 9 months til i got preg again), 9 months preg and 9 months bf

MrsTM, you ask "Surely a GYN would be familiar with the concept of BFing suppressing ovulation?"

The answer is, amazingly, no.

I could tell you some equally amazing stories.

You may be the first woman with a 6 mth old baby where the issue of bf has come up - truly.

No periods here and ds3 is 19 months. I have a feeling it won't be long now though
