Infant feeding

You know how we are always bemoaning the fact that there is such a lack of proper support for women who want to breastfeed? Well,it looks as if we can finally do something about it.....

There now exists a Breastfeeding Coalition, an unprecedented alliance of not-for-profit organisations committed to the health of the nation who want Government to take action over this critical issue.

Read the breastfeeding manifesto here

One of the tragic facts to come out of this is that of the women who have given up breastfeeding by 6 weeks,9 out of 10 wished they had breastfed for longer.

a fantastic document lets hope the powers that be listen

mush4brains · 30/04/2007 19:47

Check that your local MP has signed up & if not email them to let them know of the manifesto.
I have just nabbed one of the local candidates up for election on thursday & told them about the lack of BFing help in the area. She started talking about a drop in centre run by MW or HV, I said it would be good but preferable to be run by someone like a BFC & listed the organisations, which she did write down! She said she would come back with an update, wonder if she will?

Good document
Point number three esp salient (so many many many threads on MN about this)

moondog · 30/04/2007 20:54

Yes
Very heartening to see all the organisations that have signed up to this.
Great to see its not just being seen as a lentil weaver mum issue.

nice to see groups working together on it.

Prunerli · 30/04/2007 20:58

Is it really only 2% of babies b/fed at 6m? Blimey I must know all of them.....

sparkymummy · 30/04/2007 21:02

How do you find out which MPs have signed up?

Prunerli, many, many more babies than that are bf at 6 mths, but latest figures show only 2 per cent of them are exclusively bf.

It's a great document, indeed

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/04/2007 21:16

Fabulous.

It means breastmilk with nothing else, Pruni.

Why is NCT not involved then Tiktok? (I think I am right in understanding this is where your affiliations lie.)

OP posts:
tiktok · 30/04/2007 22:07

Er, why misleading? Guidelines are to exclusively breastfeed for 6 mths. Exclusive means with nothing else ie only breastfeeding. 2 per cent do it.

What's not to understand?

tiktok · 30/04/2007 22:09

NCT not involved? yes we are....where'd you get the idea we weren't? I've got one of the postcards here to send to my MP and the NCT is listed as a coalition member.

tiktok · 30/04/2007 22:10

And the logo is on that PDF, too

moondog · 30/04/2007 22:11

Ah yes!
Course you are!
Couldn't see your logo in page at the end of document.
Can now-right in the middle. Duh!!!

i signed this and sent a lengthy rant to my mp ages ago, how long do you think before i chase up? a reply seems a reasonable expectation.

aside, nobody who might record these things has ever asked me whether i am bf so can't think the percentages mean much at all. well they don't include me anyway.
