My son was above the 50th percentile, on the 75th, but for the past month, he has dropped down to just below the 50th.
He is not too bothered about his milk (I have bottle fed formula from day one). Midwife says its fine so long as he has 20 ounces a day, he was having more than that at 1 week old!
It seems that he is frustrated gtting the milk out of the teat (Avent 6month + teats) I have tried him with the Avent Magic cup, but he cannot cope with it. Midwife said to use a tipping cup with spout on, so I tried him with the magic cup spout, without the cover on the back, so it pours out. He didn't like that. Once he is upset by the fuss, I cannot get him to have anything so I end up mixing in the milk with baby rice and he is happy with that. He should be having more milk than this, I just can't seem to get him to have it.
Any ideas?

Bunsen - my LO will only take his milk when he has baby rice mixed with milk first, THEN his bottle. I have no idea why but he took an 8oz bottle this morning after his rice which is unheard of.

He is 15 weeks

Ha ha me too Wilkie! It was that or start counting more ribs! So its not just my LO then, maybe its a boredom thing? I have to turn the telly off as he will watch it whilst I am feeding him. Its the only thing that keeps me awake at 6.30am tho! He'll crane his neck towards it no matter how I face him and stop drinking his milk. Activity out the window distracts him. Does anyone know of bigger teats? My mum said that she put a knitting needle through the teats when we were babies, but not sure if thats a good solution.

Also what age do you stop feeding them via the bottle and just use the spout cup thing?
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried avent Variflow?? It is a slit rather than a hole and you can turn it three ways to vary the flow. LO dictates how much milk to take.

Also, my LO prefers to be fed whilst sat in his bouncy chair.....

Weird, freaky babies we have that don't like milk

Not sure when they just have the cup/spout thing...

Cheers Wilkie,
yes I use the Variflow teats, I am thinking of cutting the end off it now, might be more useful! LOL.

Ha ha ha ha

Which milk are you using?? I was on SMA Gold but switched to Aptamil and he is better on it at least...

bunsen · 28/04/2007 21:32

Yes he is on SMA gold, might try a different brand and see if that helps then, ta!

Finally before I go, LOADS of the girls on our post natal thread were using SMA and we have switched en masse to Aptamil and EVERYONE is commenting on the difference in how settled/happy/content* our LOs are

Oh Right, its a defo then, I'll get some of that Aptimil next time, I only used that as it was the one they gave us in hospital and I didn't want to freak him out with a change (!?). I still have a load of Hipps organic that I didn't use. Might crack into that tomorrow and see if he likes it.
Thanks Wilkie.

Good luck, let me know xx

Wilkie · 28/04/2007 21:41

BTW, it took about 48 hours to get SMA out of LOs system so do persevere...

bunsen · 28/04/2007 22:26

Will do, cheers!
