Can you exclusively breastfeed and still get periods back?

DS is 13 weeks - woke this morning to find tons of blood (sorry TMI) - I thought if you breastfed you didn't get periods - am I being thick?!

no, not being thick
I exclusively bf both times and the wretched things came back at 6 weeks both times

it is, for sure, a curse

katierocket · 24/04/2007 06:06

ah thanks sw - I know it sounds daft but I always assumed that they didn't come back until you finished BF. With DS1 I fed until 12 weeks so never really came up against the issue.
I got really worried this morning, convinced myself something was wrong.

That's a bummer katierocket.

katierocket · 24/04/2007 06:09

How weird though, wonder why it happens to some women and not others?

because we are a super-breed and God wants us to breed more, and thus gives us back our fertility sooner than mere mortals

Not really.

I dunno, just habitual bleeders I suppose

I got mine back at 6 weeks both times I bf, and to be honest it made the whole bf experience quite difficult - every month - PMT and bf don't go very well together - I couldn't stand being touched the week before period - big sore boobs, feeling really antsy, urgh! I hated breastfeeding during my periods. I bf for 18 months the first time ( second child, first one bf ) and when I had my third child and realised my periods had returned AGAIN at 6 weeks, I was really fed up, and chose to only bf for 6 months that time.

Mine came back at about 4 months, which co-incided with DS sleeping through the night (think I read something about it being to do with gaps between feeds). Then I didn't have one for a few months as he promptly stopped sleeping through and was feeding LOADS in the night. He is now 9 months, still bf and my periods are there but a bit unpredictable. And as for the sleeping... well, that's another thread
