How much really is safe to drink? and are there any long term affects on baby?

Im sorry if this has been done lots before but i am new to this site and looking for some answers to some specific questions as i am too paraniod just to use my own judgement as others have advised.

I really missed drinking whilst preg and the idea of not being able to drink for another year kind of put me off BF. however i love BF my 9 week old and have got on so well with it, he loves it, he has gained so much weight (he was a month prem and has now 12 pounds, has doubled his weight) and i have a great milk supply.

I would like to know

  • Is it acceptable to have the 'occasional' night out or family gathering with about 4 perhaps 5 glasses of wine if i follow the right safety procedures?
  • i can express enough milk in advance but what do i do whilst out when im full? squeeze down the loo?
  • does pumping and dumping after drinking finished really get rid of the alcohol?
  • one website said your body needs an hour to get rid of one unit of alcohol but another said 2. if i want to enjoy half a bottle of rose tonight with hubby, waiting 6 hours til feeding seems a long time, though will do it if necessary. is this correct?
  • before preg i used to enjoy at least 2-3 glasses of wine a night at weekends only but if done now and even if i follow the right guidlines as asked above, is it irresponsible to do this every weekend whilst breastfeeding?
  • a friend of mine said that alcohol whilst BF could impair babys development. is this true or are the effects just short term? she said if i miss drinking that much then i shoudl switch to formula.

Id be really grateful for some advice on this as am looking forward to enjoying my wine again! mmmmmmmmmm.

milkmummy, best thing to do is to check the archives, as you're right, we have done this a lot and there is some good discussion and information there.

Yes re pumping and dumping apparently alcohol clears from your milk in the same way as it clears from your blood, so over time disappears completely (though there isn't much there percentage-wise in the first place).

I have wine with my dinner every night and bf, still going at 9 months old!
