Will hair dye get into my breastmilk?

I really need to have my hair highlighted again, but I'm still feeding my 9-month-old three or four times a day and don't want to poison him with chemicals. Does anyone know if it's ok to do it or should I wait?

Bit harsh, tiktok, I haven't been even mildly hysterical on this thread

and I think taking steps to make sure your breastmilk is free from contaminants is to be encouraged not mocked, really...

sorry, F&Z, it was a joke and not a comment on you or your posts at all......

please have a little laugh at it

FrannyandZooey · 17/04/2007 17:43

NO it is a VERY SERIOUS matter

(as you would know if you had sat for 3 hours in the sunshine with sticky lemon juice dripping down the back of your neck and attracting flies)

Tiktok - sorry to see you getting a hard time on this thread.

Can I just ask a genuine question though - the standard advice during pregnancy is to not dye your hair - is that based on the same assumption re absorption?

tiktok · 17/04/2007 17:55

Aw, bean, not getting a hard time really at all, and I can take it!! Thanks for your concern, though!

I don't know about pregnancy and hair dye - I can't think there is anything wrong with it, but you can tell I have a fairly relaxed approach to this sorta stuff! It certainly has never put me off having whatever I felt like having on my bonce.

I have heard that your hair reacts differently to dye and perms and stuff when pg, though.

i am sorry if any one thinks i gave tiktok a hard time, i know there is a lot of tiktok worship on MN , doesn't mean she is always right though, no it isn't about giving anyone a hard time, i do like my FACTS though i am just a silly, aging lawyer going slightly grey at the temples using organic hair dyes for what i think is a justified reason !

dyes and other chemicals in cosmetics, bleach on your skin, etc. CAN get into your bloodstream whether you like it or not, if it can get into your bloodstream it can get into your milk (ok, minimal perhaps !) it is the nature of the human body....la...la....la...dee...da...dee

have a good evening ladies

yellowrose · 17/04/2007 18:39

i should have put a at the end !

frenchleave · 17/04/2007 19:49

Aw, all's well that ends well. Phew, I thought that was going to end in an ungainly scrap.

Will let you know how I get on with the juice. Can't say attracting buzzy things appeals, but my mousey hair says I'm worth it

yellow, you did not give me a hard time, and it was a good discussion, no hard feelings whatsoever....and it wasn't you who was 'astounded' at my arrogance

yellowrose · 17/04/2007 20:13

well tiktok, that is because i honestly don't think you are arrogant, we were both polite to each other, i.e. we didn't get personal, that is important, we have done this on another thread too remember without a bust up ?

i think we were just talking about different issues, i totally support your view that women should bf no matter the risk of small amounts of chemicals, god knows how much stuff i have in my body, but i know my bm is excellent for my son

i am going to find that dr hale one day you know, i am not a health prof., but i still think he should talk to me as a concerned mum
