Anti depressents in breastmilk

Berrie · 17/04/2007 07:24

I know that I can take anti depressents and breastfeed but I don't like to. However, since I feel like I'm going to lose it sooner or later I think that I'd better start taking the packet I shoved to the back of the cupboard. Anyway, DD is 18 months so breastmilk is obviously not vital and I was wondering if anyone knew how long the drug remains in the milk and if there is anything to be gained by taking it after the bedtime feed and dropping the morning feed? I suspect it doesn't work like that but if any one knows I'd be very grateful!

One of the helplines has this info. If no one else finds it sooner, I will do it for you when I get back from the school run.

Please try phoning LLL

they may not have the answer to hand, but will be able to find out for you quite easily. They are also supportive to mothers who are breastfeeding older children.

Sorry you are feeling crappy. Have you got support or would it help to talk more about it on here?

I think your need for meds comes first, but breastfeeding can help make your life as a mother easier, and also releases hormones which can help with your mood, so the ideal would be to carry on breastfeeding while taking whatever medication you need.

Which ad? because they vary

Oh hello, had given up on this one, its setraline martianbishop. Thanks Franny, I do feel that it is a hormonal problem as my depression returned when my periods started again but it is intermittant rather than constant. I've been recording all of it on a chart since July but there isn't really a pattern except that when dd is ill and I increase breastfeeding I feel a lot better...Jelly thanks for offering to find it for me. I've done some google searches and this antidepressent is one of the ones that does not seem to be present in the infant and does not seem to peak in breastmilk.
I just feel desperate. It's not fair on the children and dh. I do need to take them, it's just that I know I'll feel better in a day or two...

berrie - according to kellymom.com and i think also Bresatfeeding Network (they have a leaflet on their website) that is safe. i have checked it before, asked for it after a close relative died suddenly and i was very depressed for months. never took it though, got sleeping tablets to help me sleep. but i know that one is safe because i investigated it and asked my gp for it as i still bf.

take care, hope you are felling better

yellowrose · 17/04/2007 09:15

sorry, "feeling better", can't spell, still half asleep

Berrie · 17/04/2007 09:33

Thanks yellowrose, I have made the follow up appointment with gp for when the packet is finished, all I have to do now is take one I suppose...
