DD (nearly 4mths) exclusively breastfed feeding every 2 hours...

...and has been for about 4 days now. To start with I put it down to a growth spurt but now i'm not so sure.

She was sleeping through and is now waking up twice. Goes to bed at about 8.30-9 and is waking at about 3 and then 6 for feeds. whereas she was going to bed at 9 and then waking up at 7.

I'm shattered. Through the day you can sow set the clock by her as she is demanding feeds every 2 hours. Her feeds last between 10 and 25 mins. My DD1 took nearly an hour but DD2 is more efficient at feeding and has been since birth.

I'm not sure what to do as I'm not sure how long i can sustain these feeds. The frequency is proving really hard. We've tried her on formula a few times and she has refused. To be honest I dont want the stress of trying to force formula on her when i dont really want to go down that route and i think she's a bit young for solids.

Anyone got any tips on how to increase my supply? or stretch the intervals out?

I'd never heard of the 4 month growth spurt before mine came along - but it seems to be a corker! Goes on for ages.. with those 'from 4 months' packets of babyfood taunting you from the shelf.

Is she producing wet nappies? Some dirty ones?

I think if you're bfeeding her this much, it's nothing to do with your supply. Kellymom.com has a good page on distractible babies - she'll be paying more attention to the world at this age and getting distracted by things.

Far more likely that she's having a growth spurt - she will settle again, I'm sure.

lol Kif. I saw them all in Boots this morning

hunker - she is producing lots of wet nappies and truly pooing for england! I guess what goes in must come out. She had been pooing once a day but yesterday it was 8 times . Poos like fine too - like wholegrain mustard

You might be right about distractions i guess. Last week she rolled over for the first time and giggled for the first time so I guess she is experiencing a lot of new things. DD1 always used to start waking when she had a devt milestone.

i know i just need to ride it out.....it is just soooo hard.

Then we will hear no more of this talk about your supply because it sounds utterly fine - but you may have an enormous hug to comfort you when you wake up in the night to feed her. Thinking of you and cheering you from the sidelines - you're doing so well!

Must admit, it sounded dodgy advice to me as I'd been told before (by NCT bf counsellor) that my diet wasn't an issue - but it did seem to work for my friend, poss a 3 month growth spurt instead. My friend not part. keen on demand feeding. But it was a good excuse to eat more cake for both of us

GS, my ds did a 90 min feed night before last before bed & I was shattered, I almost fell down the stairs once I'd finished. It really is incredibly exhausting, well done for keeping going with it, I'm sure will get better soon. I often have a hideous few days followed by some good ones which persuades me to keep going.

sounds like you're doing great - just keep telling yourself this stage is really really short in the scheme of things...

i've been going through the same thing for 2 weeks at least now......thought it was distractible baby as kellymom site says but tanked up ds....felt sure he'd got plenty of food to see him thru and he still woke ever couple of hours. I have been co sleeping for a couple of hours in the morning 6am-8am ish as i'm too knackered to do anything else. it does mean i get some sleep, but i am worried he likes it too much and seems to be harder to settle in crib now!!
