I'm really at my wits end with this so would appreciate some advice. DD is 10 months and for the last 3 weeks has been biting me when feeding. She bites every single time and it bloody hurts

I fed DS until he was two so was hoping to do the same for her but I'm losing my patience with it. DS went through a biting phase but not like this.

She teething so i give teething powder, calpol, etc but it doesn't help. When she bites I take her off and stop the feed. She cries but then does it again.

Any advice? I've resorted to feeding her at night as it's the only time it's vaguely pleasant!

Have a read of this on Kellymom. Don't know if it will help though Smile

I'm not proud of this solution but it worked. I had this with DS and then he started biting me in the day etc . So I gently bit him back. Not so he cried but so he understood that it hurt. Hadn't done it since and that was 6 months ago and I'm still BF.

Thanks, I've tried all the Kellymom stuff but it's not helping Sad

I have thought about doing something drastic ninja - she either laughs or cries with my attempts to stop her but continues at every single feed.

DS did it for a while. I called one of the Bfing Helplines and tried their suggestions. They did work but can't for the life of me remember what they were. Was just really glad as he was 7 months and I thought I'd have to switch to ffing.

Ouch! My DS1 went through a bit of a biting phase. I did two things, firstly like you I'd stop the feed immediately when he bit. Secondly, I started paying really close attention to his feeding because he only ever bit at the end of a feed - does yours do this? I found hat I could usually tell when his latch started to slip (they cannot bite while feeding because their tongue will cover their teeth), and I would take him off the boob as soon as that happened before he had a chance to chomp down. He did stop eventually and continued to BF him till 23 months old.
Good luck!

She's biting mostly at the beginning (but also at the end) so we're not getting the chance to actually get a feed going most of the time. My supply has really dwindled, which is why I've started waking her at night as it would end breastfeeding otherwise Confused

I've tried hand expressing a bit before I feed her, as thought she might be getting bored waiting for the let down but she still bites. I managed to feed her before bed for the first time in a week and she bit me so hard at the end, I had to prize her jaw open.

We're on holiday at the moment so I can't get to a breastfeeding place for advice but might call someone tomorrow. I'll be gutted if this is the end of feeding for us.

Ah, sorry to hear that. Just had another thought, maybe try nipple shields? Not sure if these would help but may help to at least avoid any injury to yourself.

Otherwise you could always use a pump and feed her expressed BM from a bottle if she will take one?

mypoornips · 09/08/2017 20:02

Thanks, I think nipple shield might be a good option just to give my poor nipples a break!

Unfortunately she's a bottler refuser and not that great at drinking from cups for some reason, so I'm her main source of fluid aside from food of course. It's 30 odd degrees here so it's been a bit stressful in that regard. My pump is at home but I have hand expressed.

I've not managed to get her on the breast at all today Sad
