My baby is 5 weeks old and he's not put on as much weight as HV would like. So far I've been exclusively breast feeding & ideally that's how I'd like it to stay.
LO feeds on and off between midnight and 8am every day & he's exhausted, so I introduced a dummy to help him settle (he doesn't settle well during the day either). The dummy worked the first night and he slept for 4 hours in a row (unheard of!).
His attachment is sometimes off, especially at night for some reason, & Im left with very sore, white, cracked nipples. I'm not sure if it's all just in my sleep-deprived head or not, but when he does feed, most of it is quick sucking - maybe only a couple of gulps suck-swallowing. He's producing a lot of wet and dirty nappies, so surely he must be getting enough milk? If not - perhaps I should introduce a bottle at night, which might help him sleep better too?
Where's the baby instruction manual again...?! Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi @Firsttimemum17

Did you continue breastfeeding? Or How did it all pan out? I'm having similar probs with my LO not swallowing much at the boob (although he's only 11 days) but I worry about my supply a lot as he feeds a fair amount! Wondered how it all went for you?

Getting enough dirty and wet nappies to say he's getting something through his system but I'm still worried! He feeds for fairly short bursts sometimes and my boobs never feel full although I can get milk out when I hand express!

Hello!

Congratulations on your lo :)

Yes, I carried on - and my lo is happy and well fed (-phew!). Still have pain issues on one side due to damage caused in the early days, but bought a pump due to arrive tomorrow - but that'll be another story...!

I think the thing to keep your eyes on are the nappies. By the sounds of it, your lo is getting just the right amount.

I spent a few days drinking a lot of water, doing a lot of skin to skin & letting him suckle whenever he wanted to encourage my supply.

After a day or two of fewer poos and 'less full' boobs, it all seemed to settle. Whether or not, for me, it was all psychological - I'm afraid I can't say!

I'd recommend going to a breastfeeding group if/when you feel like getting out and about, or if you don't there are helplines you can phone or contact on social media to discuss your situation.

Let me know how it all goes. Best of luck :)
