11 week old can't drink more than 3oz at a time.

My son is 11 weeks old tomorrow and has always struggled to feed due to colic caused by lactose intolerance and also reflux. It dawned on us tonight that he is only able to drink 3oz at a time no matter how long he goes between feeds. It also looks like he wants to drink more but is physically unable, uncomfortable and distressed when he tries Sad

Can anyone offer any ideas as to why that might be please, maybe from similar experience?

We have a doctor's appointment next week for him but they've been less than great with him so far. I'm not convinced they'll take me seriously as they haven't the last two times I've taken him down for other conditions (fungal groin sores and his head flattening one side). They treat me like a panicky first time mum! I had to fight for cream to treat his fungal infection and they aren't fussed by his flat head at all Sad

Thanks in advance.

Also his weight gain has started to slow as he's dropped to the percentile below, I'm guessing because he's not eating enough.

We've tried reflux milk but it's too thick for him and leaves him constipated and he's currently on colic milk. Before that he was on normal milk with infacol, infant gaviscon or colief drops added in. Not all at the same time, but one at a time as a trial and error process. He also has MAM anti colic bottles and medium and fast flow teats.

My daughter, now 14 months has never had more 4oz some babies are just like that I think. She was breastfed only until 4 months and then ended Up having prescription formula as top ups to help her build weight. It turns out she had a dairy allergy and was even sensitive to milk in my diet. Once I cut out dairy too we combi fed until 10 months.

If he's uncomfortable if he tries, does he just not want it or is he showing signs of hunger and seems in pain when he starts feeding. A baby should be getting roughly 2.5 floz per pound of body weight in 24 hours. So if baby is 10lb, they should be drinking 25 floz a day. Is he drinking enough in the 24 hours?

Just seen your second post about him not drinking enough and low weight gain. Has the Gap mentioned the possibility of Cow's Milk Protein Allergy?

Film him when he feeds on your phone. Go to the GP, get DH to take a day off and come with you if you have to. The GP needs to take this seriously and refer you to a Paed for testing.

If he's crying in pain tonight after feeding and is in pain, take him straight to A&E. You may get a referral to a Paed tonight Smile

My nephew had similar issues and ended up on a concentrated higher calorie formula so he was getting more nutrition from smaller amounts. Think it was called Infatrini?

He was investigated for cows milk protein issues, lactose intolerance, was on reflux media etc and nothing made any difference till he eventually grew out of it at about 18 months. He is still a smaller child but is 5 now and is a bundle of energy and a happy sociable little boy. They never got to the bottom of it.
