I'm so sore and fed up, please tell me how to stop it hurting so much

DD is 8 days old and I'm trying really hard to bf her. My nips are really sore (one isn't too bad, the other is excrutiating). I'm at the point where I'm frightened to feed her as I know it will hurt so much.

One of my nips is slightly inverted so it hurts as she first starts to suck as she is pulling on it but also it seems to be splitting in half! I've tried rubbing milk into it and using Kamillosan but it's not helping. I'm pretty sure she's latching on ok, I've tried and tried to get her in a position where it doesn't hurt but there doesn't seem to be one.

Is there anything else I can do to stop the pain, or do I give in and use the formula I sent DH out for this morning?

I so badly want to feed her as I had to stop after 10 weeks with DD1, but as it is at the moment I just can't.

I think I will get some Lansinoh tomorrow (or rather DH will!) and will keep persevering with the latching position. I do find though that if I spend ages pulling her off then she doesn't settle after the feed, so I tend to let her go on however she lands, then suffer for it afterwards. I will also try the rugby ball position and see if that helps ease the existing soreness.

Thanks all for your help, I feel much better now , I've even stopped crying for the first time today!

Oh yes I second Piglits suggestion about walking around topless, did wonders for my sore nipples!

Oh dear she's just woken up, wish me luck.....

How much is Lasinnoh for a tube? around £10 - £12...

Moosma PLEASE do some research yourself on Silver Healing before you buy the cream as this will just soothe the nipples and not quickly, properly, heal them.

Silver really does work. It is actually being used in some UK hospitals to combat MRSA too.

You'd be better spending that little bit more for a product to keep and use again, and again if necessary.

Laninsoh...bloody expensive (£10) but really works and quickly. Also n shields really helped me too, made the feeds pain free. You just put them over your nips and then latch the baby on as ususal. Some MWs/HVs advise against using them but they meant i fed for 4 months rather than 4 weeks!

You don't use much Lansinoh, so while it is pricy, a little goes a long way.
I remember using these cups from Avent - not shields. They were rounder that that and you wore them in your bra. One type had holes in the top to allow air in. The other type you could sterilise and wear and use the milk. Sounds nice, huh? Anyway the point of them was they applied a slight pressure to the breast and so relieved the pain and allowed air to your nipples to heal. And you could use the milk that collected.
Word of warning though, I used both types in if you forget your wearing the ones with air holes and bend over you make a right old mess.
Its all coming back to me now. Not pleasant is it??

Determination - are Silverette/Silver Healing the same thing? How do they work? Never heard of it before, but keen to know more for next time.

determination · 28/02/2007 16:13

Silverette are small Sterling Silver cups that you wear over your nipples inside your bra - between feeds.. and the silver prevents the bactria from living and magically heals you within (in my case) 48hours.

Silver and MRSA

The UK seem to be just catching onto the full benefits of the use of Silver for healing.. it is a "natural miracle!"

Mw has been, she's wonderful! She showed me the rugby position and helped me latch her on and I fed her painlessly for pretty much the first time. She's not settled now, she woke up and started crying about 10 minutes after I put her down but that seems to be fairly standard during the day now and is a problem I will deal with separately...

The point is, my nips aren't hurting, yippeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Also DH popped out and got me some Lansinoh, it's much gooier than Kamillosan and seems to seal in better, will see how I go...
