I am bloody mad and disappointed!

That my exclusively breastfed DS3 has been diagnosed as insulin dependent diabetic!!

He was preterm at 35+4 weeks. He had massive amounts of phototherapy due to rhesus disease. Was given parenteral feeding (TPN). Had a blood transfusion at 7 weeks.

Suffered from asthma from todderhood after suffering from croup. Was on inhalers and inhaled steroids about 5yrs old. Asthma seems to have gone.

Dad was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthrirts last year. Was diagnosed with diabetes on 22nd Feb and is now on insulin injections. How very dare he. He was exclusively breastfed till 20 weeks - should have been longer but I didn't make it.

He was due to get MMR tomorrow - thank goodness he was diagnosed this week or i would have blamed vaccination.

Life is shitty sometimes - even though I know it could be worse....

Mears, the news about DS3 must have been a real shock.
How is he getting on with his injections?

Mears - I read your thread about him going to hospital but haven't really spoken to you on here before so didn't post. I have read alot that you have posted on BF and stuff though.
It will get better, though I bet it is a bit of a shock to all of you at the moment. Having had a couple of friends who were type1, you do kind of adjust, and my impression of you is that you are the kind of person who will support him and make it an easier transition.

Thanks for your posts. I know it is an irrational though but I just wanted to get it out.

DS3 is coping really well with his injections but his sugars are running high. It was 18 again going to bed. He has been fast tracked out of hospital - less that 18 hours from diagnosis which I am not sure is good or bad. I would have rathered that his glucose level had nbeen brought down closer to normality but there must be a reason why this has been done. We are at the clinic tomorrow afternoon so i will ask questions then.

Thanks for the offer of help survivour but I think we are coming to grips with it. Have joined Diabetes UK tonight and have a few friends who have experience first hand.

I feel so sorrry for him having to take this on board at 16 yrs. I am sure he will be fine though..

Sorry mears, just went off to find your thread about what happened. I am very suprised that they have let him out before sorting out his blood sugars. Thay should be between 4-7mmol before food and between 7-10mmol two hours after food. To let him stay at home with sugar levels of 18 do not sound good at all. Please keep an eye on him when he does have high sugar levels, it makes me feel hungrier when I have high sugar levels. And insulin gives you a better appetite aswell. I have increased in weight....If your son doesn't mind, he could keep a diary on here? Just a thought.

Statistics of course describe the average person. But your son is not an average person, he's a unique individual and very special. Who knows, after such a rocky start, what other nasty surprises you have prevented by breastfeeding him?

Yes oops - One of my friends got type1 and was told that it was probably due to a nasty fluey [sp] tummy virus thing he had. Nothing to do with his diet.

Oh mears - I am so very sorry. You have done the BEST for your child by excl bf, there is absolutley nothing you could have done better.

I also would like to thank you personally for being so supportive of bf on this website. You are helping an enormous no. of women and that is an incredibly difficult task.

Yes, life is so crap sometimes, my thoughts are with you and your family and hope that there is a brighter future for you

hello mears. really sorry about your ds3. i was diagnosed with diabetes at 19. type 2 though. it is an absolute bugger, but you do learn to get on with life. hope you feel better soon. xxx

My mum exclusively breastfed my brother until he was 6 months old. He was diagnosed with IDD at 5. He was then diagnosed with coeliacs at 20. He's 23 now very healthy and doesn't let any of it get him down. He does everything he wants and so far although it does play a large part of all of our lives you deal with it. life is shit.

Sorry to read about your ds mears - you know you done the right thing. You cant blame anything you'v done - just be glad you did bf him.
