milk spilling out of mouth?!

Hi!

My bottle fed 4 week old ds can't take a bottle without half of it dribbling out the side of his mouth.

I don't know how much actually comes out but most of the time it will soak a bib. And run down his neck.

I have tried both avent and tommee tippee bottles but hasn't made it better.

My hv checked for tongue tie but reckons he hadn't got it and doesn't have any more advice

Does anyone have any experience or advice? Thanks!

Would it help to change the twat to a slower flow? Maybe he's getting the milk too quickly and can't swallow it all in time.

Ds was the same, I used to cover his neck with a muslin cloth as bibs were useless!

I tend to have a muslin round the back of his neck to catch the spillage because otherwise it soaks into my sleeves.

Does he have a tongue tie? It can often cause milk to dribble out the sides. Paced feeding may help him cope a bit better.

What do you mean by paced feeding?

Yes I'd get a second opinion on the tounge tie, this is a very common sign in a bottle fed baby. She may not be well qualified to check, a certified lactation consultante can. Ask if there is Somerton in your area who you can be referred to epically if it's stressing your baby out.

Don't be fobbed off as it can then cause more problems when it comes to introducing solids and talking as well.

Well seen hv again I think it might be somehow related to reflux. We've got some infant gaviscon and she recommended one of the cheap old style bottles

If no change were off to speech and language therapy!

If he doesn't have tongue tie he may have top lip tie- my DS has it and it causes a distinctive clicking noise (whilst breastfeeding, no idea about bottles) and lots of milk dribble. He's now 5 months and feeds much easier as his mouth is bigger. They don't correct or routinely look for top lip tie.

I agree with getting second opinion and also Junosmum on checking for lip ties. You could try a little cup (not one with a lid, just a tiny one for babies) whist you're waiting. HV or midwife to should be able to show you how. My friend's baby had a tongue tie and couldn't take a bottle until it was sorted but could use a baby cup. It was very sweet and helped them through that time. If reflux is a factor, cranial chiropractic totally got rid of reflux when my eldest was a baby.

Also get his palate checked.

My ds was like this. They ruled out tongue tie, which he has actually got so that was wrong, and as he was putting on weight sent us on our way.

Found out at 3 that he has a submucal cleft palate. He's now had one operation but will need more. I'm getting increasingly pissed off that it wasn't spotted before as it has really affected his speech and they could have operated before he started talking which would have made a difference.

Yes, yes yes like roundtable says palate check too. Cleft lip/palate/ties all can compromise feeding and situation can be massively helped. Totally agree, don't get talked into accepting a vague answer. Best wishes for getting sorted quickly.

It seems that because he's putting weight on they don't see the issue but it's obviously not normal!

I think we're going to see a speech abd language therapist soon with any luck. Seems silly because he's obviously tiny but hopefully they can have a good look in his mouth!

Dribbling milk was one of the many problems ds1 had, but it went undiagnosed until he was 6yo. He also had a bubble palate. Have a google and a look inside his mouth. If there's a bubble palate, there's more than likely a posterior tongue tie too.
