struggling with a 4 day old

Hi, I'm currently struggling with bf.

Ds was born on Thursday at 36 weeks.

We struggled to bf in the hospital however he did manage to latch a few times.

I've been expressing and bottle feeding whilst still trying to get him to feed.

Last night he latched on and fed for 20 minutes! Yay!

Over night we struggled again as my milk has come in with a vengeance and my boobs are rock hard.

Tried to feed him throughout the day today but he just wants to sleep. He woke for a feed about 11am and struggled for about 30 minutes before I gave him a bottle.

I then tried to wake him around 2pm but he was having none of it!

At around 4 I expressed so my boobs weren't so hard and attempted to wake ds but he wouldn't wake so I bottle fed again. He started to wake by the end but I couldn't breastfeed as the milk had filled up again!

Anyone with helpful hints or tips?

Ask the midwife to check for tongue tie
Keep going you're doing really well to still be putting baby on on day 4. The milk coming in days are the hardest especially with the hormones that follow. Settle down somewhere comfy with snacks, drinks, box set etc and try and put baby on as often as possible. Good luck and congrats on your squishy bundle

Just re read and saw 36 weeked. His mouth must be tiny... Have you you tubed the flipple technique? Or squash your nipple area flat like how you'd squash a burger to fit it in your mouth... Hope that makes sense

Have you tried using nipple shields? My baby is 10 days old and it's the only way I've got her to latch so far. Not a long-term solution as they're a bit of a faff and need sterilising but might make it easier to get BF established...

Express off so that your boobs are nice and squishy, it's amazing the shape babies squash your nipples too for latching! I was also told to try waking them properly for a feed, so nappy change or stripping them off.
Afraid it's perseverance, even for a breast feeding pro a new baby is always a challenge, I was an utter mess with dc4 till he was around 2 weeks, oh and you may find that he has a side that he finds easier to latch onto and feed from. Congrats on your new baby :)
