Making up Formula - aaarrgghh - safest way?

hello...
first of all, when i ask this question please take it as a given that i cannot make formula up freshly for each feed - it's just not practical and 4mo DS is not predictable enough.
SO - currently i am putting formula into very hot water, letting it cool for 20 mins, then putting in the fridge and using within 24 hours, my thinking being that the formula needs the very hot water in order to become sterile. My SIL on the other hand, reckons that this method allows bacteria to develop in the made up formula while it is cooling - her method is to keep the boiled water in the fridge, warm to required temp when needed and then add formula, as that way the formula is fresh - while i am arguing that it's pretty pointless since without having been in water above 70 degrees it's not sterile anyway.
i am about to go on holiday and will need to take feeds out with me and am stressing about the best way to do this - i might just end up spending a fortune on that bloody ready made stuff - but i usually use organic and there isn't a ready made organic milk.
please help, i am going mental.
