Very concerned that my 15 day old son isnt getting enough milk

my ds has been bf since day 1 he has been feeding sometimes hourly then settled once my milk came in to every 3 hrs.Yesterday we had a day of feeding constantly and i didnt seem to be fulfilling his hunger.So as i was getting concerned i decided to give him a formula through the nite of which he only had 2.5 ozs (and it says on the box he should be having 4 ozs as he is over 2 weeks old (he only had 2.5 ozs and that was after a 4 hr sleep) then this morning he fed for 25 mins then went to sleep for 4 hrs.So i expressed 4 ozs to see if he would have it again he had 2.5 ozs.3 hrs later he fed from me for 20 mins then went to sleep and tonight he has had a formula,and again had just under 3 ozs and has now gone to sleep.
Thanks for advice in advance and i apologise for my naivity but im a first time mum.

It doesn't sound like you have anything to be worried about.
is he weeing and pooing ok? and putting on weight?
He will change his feeding habits, they're crafty like that. just when you think you've got them figured out they decide they'll do things differently lol
the more he feeds the more milk you will make, so feed him on demand and you should be just fine

Debbsy, with b/fed babies you need to feed 'on demand' to continually increase your supply to meet the needs of your baby's appetite. They regularly go through growth spurts and developmental phases which make them feed more often on some days.

The thing about b/feeding is that you dont know how much they are getting, but, if you are feeding regularly and baby is gaining weight, then I would say baby is getting enough.

Finally, if you are topping up with formula - this could interfere with your supply if you arent expressing for the feeds you are replacing with formula.

It's a very worrying time in the early days, but, it seems like you are doing just fine.

thank you yes i have been feeding on demand as well as expressing.He has had only had 1 formula and that was cos i was concerned my milk wasnt enough for him.Yes we have plenty of wet and dirty nappies .
Mw coming tomorrow so she will weigh him.
So you think im doing ok then ?

Debbsy I must have missed your birth announcement- but I remember your pregnancy announcement! Many congratulations on your son, what is his name?

Agree with all previous advice, just bfeed on demand as and when he wants/ you can and it should work out fine in terms of supply. I didnt start out this way, and still managed to feed dd until 11mo, so it sounds like you are off to a great start, well done!

Also agree re nappies and if he seems content.

first off all...... congratulations!

second of all, you do have enough milk for him, he does not need formula. babies have growth spurts during which they feed almost constantly, it'll pass in a few days. he's likely to have a few more over the next few months and if you ride them out he'll settle back down soon enough.

(now it's 1/2 an hour since i started writing this thanks to ds so i'm sure you've had better advice by now form better experts on it all than me!)

thanks 3 little gifts i can remember your best wishes when i started the thread on mothers day.His name is Kai James and he was 8lb 5 ozs lots of dark hair,and olive skin absolutely gorgeous with brown eyes and we just love him sooooo much

Congratulations!! My ds used to feed every couple of hours at this age. I read in a book once that breastfeeding is like religion in that it requires a huge leap of faith and it is SO true. Everyone in my antenatal class went through patches of worrying that they weren't producing enough milk. It's entirely normal because (alas) there is no handy guage on your breasts to let you know how much milk they've had.

Also, I found that if I expressed from one side when I was feeding him from the other, I could produce 5oz in about 5minutes so the rate at which your body can deliver milk with the right stimuli is really amazing...

Persevere and keep in mind that they go through growth spurts which they do nothing, but feed - very tiring and worrying. As long as he is gaining weight steadily, you shouldn't have any cause for concern. That said, don't fall into the trap of getting him weighed every week as their weight gain can plateau for short periods of time. Much better to get them weighed every three weeks or so.
