Hi everyone

Gave birth on Sat to my 2nd child.

He was a big 8lb 14oz at birth and was weighed yesterday and had lost 11%.

I was told not to let him go more than 3 hours between feeds and feed him for no less than 20 mins.

Problem is he rarely feeds for 20 mins! Should I just try and feed him every 2 hours instead?!?

Hoping to go to bf support today if it's on and he's getting weighed again tomorrow.

Very few babies of any size or age feed continuusly for 20 mins - they all do stop and start to a greater or lesser extent, and very new babies may not be able to stay awake for as long as 20 mins on the breast. It seems a shame that whoever has given you this advice seems not to know this - honestly, this is really poor stuff :(

There is no need to do anything with regard to clock watching - skin to skin with your baby, holding him close to you as often as you can, and responding to all feeding cues, using both breasts at least every session, and not being too quick to think 'he's finished!' and to put him down....that's probably all you need to do :) It's likely he will feed a lot more often than 3 hourly that way.

Thanks tiktok!

They were happy with the latch and position at bf support group this morning. Hopefully next weigh in he'll be back on track!
