I'm breastfeeding and my amalgam filling has just fallen out. Help!

Hi. I'm breast feeding and today crunched on a large amalgam filling whilst stuffing my face with a chocolate eclair sweet. I managed to extract the filling from the toffee and it looks as if a few bits of amalgam chipped off. I am really worried that I may have swallowed some of the filling and if I have that it could harm my baby by getting into my breast milk. Does anyone know anything about this? I am seeing my dentist tomorrow afternoon but am reluctant to breastfeed anymore until I know it is safe. Can anyone advise me please, I'm in a bit of a state about it.

Ok, had a dig, and found this . Sounds like you're fine. Metallic mercury (i.e. the kind in your amalgam fillings) is absorbed poorly by swallowing, but well by inhalation. So the real reason to not replace or put in amalgam fillings while bf/pregnant is because the heat used to remove the filling means you end up inhaling the mercury, iyswim.

You and your baby should both be absolutely fine. How is your mouth?

Cheers for that NQC, I feel a bit better about it now. My mouth feels a bit sore and I have a massive hole in my tooth. Hopefully the dentist will put a nice white (prob v expensive) filling in tomorrow.

I've lost a filling every time I've had a baby in similar circumstances (midget gems get me every time). Having spent a fortune paying for white composite fillings to replace amalgam over the past few years I had a white one put in on the NHS about two weeks ago because DS3 is still under 1yr old. So good luck. I hate going to the dentist
