Does your 9 month old still have milk at night?

Twistedheartache · 21/07/2015 11:01

Just had 8-12 month review with health visitor who said dd shouldn't have milk at night anymore?
I just smiled & nodded because she's following percentile perfectly & I'm of the opinion that if she needs milk She needs it & even if it's just for comfort sobeit if it settles her again but I was wondering what was "normal"
If it matters, she's mix fed and has been from 3 weeks, has breastmilk at night (too lazy to make a bottle!) - usually around 4:30 but sometimes 2 ish & 5:30

My 21 month old still has milk before bed most nights!

dementedpixie · 21/07/2015 11:03

If you're happy with it then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or does

caravanista13 · 21/07/2015 11:04

Why do HVs say these things?! Fine if the baby naturally drops night feeds but really it worth a battle. So much better to go with your instincts.

BeCarefulWithThat · 21/07/2015 11:07

Smile and nod is the correct response.

My 3yo still feeds at bedtime and if she's poorly she sometimes still feeds in the night too.

Does no harm whatsoever.

VeryPunny · 21/07/2015 11:09

DD was still bfing all night long, pretty much at the age, DS is 8 months and is down to one feed any time between 3-5am. I too have mastered the nod and smile....

TheEagle · 21/07/2015 11:11

Agreed with the smile and nod - if you're happy with it, then it's fine.

DS1 had a quick sup (breastfed) in the night until he weaned at 13mo.

He's 21mo now and sometimes has water in the night.

daisydalrymple · 21/07/2015 11:16

9m this weekend, still bfs at night, also co sleeps. Hv thinks I started offering water at 5mo and he slept through from that point ....

How many oz's does dd have? I assume she is on the follow on milk by now?

My ds used to wake up a lot during the night until I switched them onto the follow on milk.

Not sure what the point of HV is sometimes...half the time they just repeat what you have told them in the first place.

What time does she have her last feed before bed? Is that bottle or breast?

dementedpixie · 21/07/2015 19:45

There is no need for follow on milk

Twistedheartache · 21/07/2015 20:08

Hi
Thanks for all your answers - I'm just gonna carry on til she's ready to stop. I should have been clearer I am not talking about bedtime, I mean during the night.
Due to mix feeding I don't know exactly how much she's having but haven't bothered with follow on milk.
Fingers crossed she'll stop soon anyway!

My 3 year old still has some in the early hours. Not sure if that is reassuring or frightening!

MrsTatum1980 · 22/07/2015 21:22

My very chunky 10month old DS has a full bottle (9oz) between 2am and 4am, he drains the bottle in record time and straight back to sleep. I keep being told I should stop this but the speed in which he drinks it all and falls back into his milk coma makes me think he needs it so I'm carrying on with it...may not be as positive when I'm back at work!

MagicAlwaysLeadsToTrouble · 22/07/2015 21:25

Yep.

I give mine 12 months of 'no quibble' night feeds and then start to wean after that.

MrsNuckyThompson · 22/07/2015 21:32

My 27 month old still has milk at night!!

MrsNuckyThompson · 22/07/2015 21:32

Oops. Just realised you meant during the night rather than bedtime!!

NickyEds · 23/07/2015 03:49

We night weaned ds at 11 months- just couldn't be sure he didn't need it until then. Sometimes it really is like hv just tell you how to raise your kids, it's silly.I know far more of my friends babies were still having night feeds at 9 months than not.

Cliffdiver · 23/07/2015 04:00

We night weaned (EBF) DD2 at around 11 months, but on occasions - like tonight, as she's teething, she'll want/need a night feed.

Cliffdiver · 23/07/2015 04:01

^ she's 16months

Hubnut · 24/07/2015 23:42

Yes my nine month old wakes at 11pm and either 2am or 4am for feeds. I thought that was quite good going. Does the HV think you should ignore or offer water? It would be nice to sleep through but I'd feel awful refusing him.

Greenstone · 25/07/2015 19:32

Nearly 9 months, 2 or occasionally 3 feeds during a 12-hour span. Would love it if she dropped to 1 but it's not awful. Like pp I think the milk drunk coma effect helps her settle back for longer - she never wakes for the day before 7 and often a good bit later.
I'm also prepared to do at least 1 night feed for first year (dd is small) and then pull the plug.

PotteringAlong · 25/07/2015 19:34

My 10 month old is still on 2 or 3 feeds a night!

eurochick · 25/07/2015 19:36

It's early days (and I don't want to jinx it by typing this!) but it looks like my one year old is self-night weaning. She was having at least one feed per night until a week or so ago but since then she has slept through about 5 nights out if 7. I'm hoping they were not flukes as I feel so much better!

DefiniteMaybe · 25/07/2015 19:40

My dd is nearly 9 months, I've just fed her to sleep and she will wake up between 3 and 6 times for milk through the night. She's too nosy to feed much through the day so I'm just going with it for now.
I'm planning on night weaning her in October half term when she'll be almost 1. She has her check with the hv in a few weeks and they know better than to spout 'you shouldn't be doing that' bullshit at me.

squizita · 27/07/2015 09:06

My hv said that too - I clarified with other hcp and it seems she misunderstood that they can go 8 hr without milk now.
Not that they must/have to.

I still feed dd once a night. More if teething or its very hot.
