take more from the breast??? A friend mentioned they thought an intake of double that ????????????

We dont have a clue though really ?

dd2 has 3 bottles a day equalling 14-16 oz and then 3-4 breast feeds (some 10 mins , some half an hr). How on earth do we realy know if they are getting what they need??

You just know by how they are thriving (or not).

Are you worried? Sounds like your little one is having a feast

melsy · 08/11/2006 08:56

Thats really made me chuckle " a feast" ,

Sometimes its only 13 oz in bottles and 3 -4 breast feeds. she was 10 .11 , so worked out that at 20 - 22 oz a day required.

Was a little worried , as she dropped a percentile, but breast feeding counselleor told me the HV was talking rubbish as BF babies always go up and up and then straighten out. (makes a change!!).

The bottles are formula btw.

Hey Melsy - how you doing? I really wouldn't worry about 1 centile - that's nothing! Have you seen the new WHO charts btw, here ? They are based on bf babies worldwide, and are much more up to date than the ones in the red books.

Agree with MamaG that weight gain is really the only way to know that they are getting enough, but if she's coming off looking contented then that's a great sign too .

I know that on the rare occasions that I expressed (got to be pointless as DD won't drink unless it's direct from source!) I could get 5oz from one breast, but babies are supposed to be more efficient than a pump, and DD would often take both boobs . She's a greedy pup like her mummy though .

hi tabs ! Hows u and yuor dd? Kayleigh said she met you for lunch, I saw her the other day, havent seen any of you for ages.

Wonder why my clinic doesnt use the new BF babies charts . Only been mix feeding a few weeks , so she should be measured on bf charts to start ??

i thought almost all babies drop down a line? all mine did for a while, but dd2 then shot off over the top.

DizzyBint · 08/11/2006 09:32

every HV doesn't know about the new charts. i had to tell mine about them.

melsy · 08/11/2006 10:01

Misdee thought it normal for them to drop down after birth , but she was weighed at just over 10 weeks and had dropped down.

Im not great with these charts ( seems silly after being a buyer and having to do charts and graphs) , but it seems shes on the 15th percentile on the new who one.

We're good thanks Melsy (well, slight bugs but nothing to worry about!). We should try and fit in a daytime meet sometime soon - maybe Christmas lunch at a soft play centre .

I don't think many (if any) HV's are using the new charts yet, but the NCT is campaigning for them to become the new standard.

Don't get too bogged down in charts though Melsy - they are only a guide, and if your DD is on 15th centile then remember that 14% of babies are smaller than her .

melsy · 08/11/2006 10:38

Yerrr lunch meet would be good , although dd does nursury most days for lunch, Tues are a good day as she does all day , so Ill just have dd2. Oooh always feels funny and nice saying that.

Im being dim , but whats the difference in this one compared to the old ones? You seem very clued up on it all, were are the percentages from , the who website???

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/11/2006 10:49

Oh Tuesdays are good for me too. Is there a good soft play somewhere between us? I only know Big Space in Harpenden so far.

The charts are on the WHO site - try here for more info. I only know about them because the NCT magazine talked about them and gave the link.

melsy · 08/11/2006 11:07

The pdf about growth standards is mind boggling! My head can only read simple chid like info!!!!

That Big space looks like a nice one. I have no idea were it is though, is harpenden off the M1? The map on the site says j9 ? I used to go the one in Watford/Garsdon , kidsport, is that far for you?

OP posts:
CantSleepWontSleep · 08/11/2006 12:12

Yes Big Space is off M1 - we're between J9 and J10, so it's very handy for us.

Looks like Kidsport is about half an hour from me, so quite do-able as long as no delays from roadworks on M1. You're Enfield aren't you? Looking at a map, Hatfield looks like a good location mid-way (which also avoids the M1 for us both!). Will see if I can find out anything about soft plays around there if you like the sound of that - sure there are some MNers in that area who could help.
