Might it be a swollen gland (could you be a bit run down)?

mmmmchocolate · 06/11/2006 21:46

Funny, that - I read this and it suddenly made me remember that I had this! (12 years ago) Naturally immediately thought I was dying of cancer - it went away on its own! If it's bothering you then ask mw or hv if you should see gp. Must be swollen/tender glands I think, but when you have a new baby it's an exhausting time without worringing about anything else - get someone to put your mind at rest.

I had this a few weeks back when my milk first came in - mw advised hot flannels and massage. Not sure if it was a blocked duct or something else, but it went away after a few days and hasn't returned (yet!)

Defo don't hesitate to see your doctor. Having lost a girlfriend to bc at 34 with a 9 month old I'm a real worrywort where it comes to lumps in this area. If it's any help while you wait for appointment, my doc said that fact that the lump was sore was a good sign, as the cancer sort usually aren't.

Its almost certainly a swollen lymph gland - the breasts drain to the glands in your armpit. It can be swollen for lots of reasons, but if swollen and tender most likely due to infection developing in your boob/blocked ducts. Could also be a infected hair follicle. Worth seeing your Dr. If it doesn't go away after abx may need more investigations - as some have already said any lump in breast/armpit should be checked out to ensure not due to cancer.

If you're bfing it's probably a blocked duct. I get this from time to time. The best thing, I have found, is to get into a hot bath on your tummy, stretch the arm forward and massage the armpit with the other hand. Always massage towards the boob, starting above the lump and finishing well below it. Use soap or a squidgy bath toy if it's very tender. Also, feed in different positions - lying down in bed on the bump side, with the arm stretched away on the bed over the baby's head is very helpful.

Be very aware, when you feed, that your clothes aren't bunched up under your arm. I think that's how I got mine as it happened after I'd been feeding in a bulky towelling dressing-gown.

If it diminshes or goes away, then fine, if, however it gets worse, gets hot, or you get swollen anywhere else in that area, then go to the dr PDQ. If it's weekend then use the out-of-hours service as mastitis can apparently develop very quickly and it's very unpleasant.

I've had theis with each child, and have managed to self-treat without any problems. Only once had to go to the GP (he gave me the advice in the above para).
